Relief from Constipation

Mineral oil always helps in relieving patients suffering chronic constipation. It is not only a popular remedy but also a time tested and reliable remedy. People suffering from mild constipation do not need to use mineral oil; instead they can just make a few dietary changes to stop the problem of constipation. A patient can expect bowel movements within 6 to 8 hours of taking mineral oil. The dosage of mineral oil should be decided by the doctor depending on the age, weight and general health of the patient. Since mineral oil has quite an unpleasant taste, it is advised that one should take it with juice or tea. There are various kinds of mineral oils available in the market and hence it is important to consult a doctor before choosing one.

It is important to know that this treatment is recommended if dietary changes fail to bring about any changes in the bowel movements. Also, use of mineral oil is a short term treatment and should not be used for long term as it may cause potential harm to the body. Extra dose of mineral oil can cause drowsiness and dehydration. Stop the use of mineral oil as soon as you get signs of dehydration such as dark colored urine or dry and sticky mouth. Start drinking more water. Constant use of mineral oil can cause deficiencies of vitamin A, D, E and F. It can also cause diarrhea and stomach cramps. Also people suffering from abdominal pain, vomiting, bloating, cramping, soreness, appendicitis or inflammatory bowel disease are advised not to use mineral oil.
