Dry Nose During Pregnancy

A dry nose during pregnancy is sometimes reported by patients. Typically, a dry nose would indicate that the mucus accumulation or creation in the nasal cavity has stopped. This can occur due to the use of some drugs like Brinzolamide, which is an application for the eyes and since the eyes and nose are connected, the drug also tends to dry up the nose. Otherwise, a dry nose during pregnancy can be caused by the pressure applied by increased blood flow on surrounding vessels. Some of the remedies that are advised for the condition are to hydrate the nose artificially by the use of a saline spray or drops of saline in the nose. Under the circumstances of being pregnant, a patient can rarely apply stronger treatments whether medical or herbal.

Some of the treatments to consider to keep the nose hydrated involve stimulating the eyes to lacrimate or secrete tears and to irritate the nose to induce sneezing. Stimulating the eyes to create tears causes the tears to drain from the eyes through a small duct at the end of the eyes close to the nose called the nasolacrimal duct that allows tears to drain into the nasal canal. This is the same reason that when humans cry, the nose also becomes stuffed up and has to be blown. Stimulating the production of tears can be done by the simple act of cutting an onion. When an onion is cut, the enzymes and the sulfide proteins, which until now were separated, come in contact with each other. This causes the release of a gas that irritates the eyes. This irritation causes lacrimation, or the production of tears, which will drain away into the nose.

Another strategy is to grind some black pepper corns and inhale, this will cause you to sneeze and release mucus into the nasal cavity. The good thing about both of these remedies is that there is no ingestion of any substances. Another technique that you can use is a steam inhalation. All you need to do is to stand over some boiling water, like an electric kettle, and inhale. This will cause the steam to condense over your nasal cavities and hydrate the area. Alternatively, one can also use a humidifier to reduce the effect of dry air irritating and shrinking the skin inside the nose. Try to avoid inhalers and other substances as some of these contain menthol and other additives that could have adverse effects in pregnant women.
