Nail fungus is a condition wherein fungus infects your nails. This infection usually begins as a yellow or white spot under the toenail or fingernail’s tip. As this fungus spreads, there are visible symptoms such as discoloration of your toenails, thick or black toenails or crumbling edges.
This makes treatment for toe nail fungus all the more important. Although nail fungus can occur in both your fingernails and toenails, the incidence of the infection occurring more in your toenails is higher. This is because the fungus finds the environment in the closed confines of your shoes a good place to thrive in which are one of the major causes of toenail fungus. Another reason could be that the blood circulation to the toes is slightly less as compared to the fingers. This makes it more difficult for the body’s immune system to find and eliminate any infection.
Cutting your toe nails too short is another cause of nail fungus. This happens because fungus penetrates through the small cuts that could have occurred while trimming the nails. Toenail fungal infection symptoms can persist for an indefinite period, if not treated in time. The fungi that result in toenail fungus are generally found in damp areas such as locker rooms, public showers, and pools, and it is best that you don’t walk barefoot in areas such as these. Hobbies or jobs that require you keep your feet damp for long periods of time can also cause fungus to grow.
It is generally found that a treatment for toenail fungal infection that is natural is more effective than the over-the-counter antifungal ointments and creams that are available. If you are suffering from toe nail fungus make sure that you keep your feet clean and dry. Wear cotton socks as they help absorb perspiration and keep your feet dry. Another effective foot fungus home remedy treatment is vinegar. Some studies indicate that keeping your feet immersed in a mixture of vinegar and water (1:2) for about 15 to 20 minutes can help provide relief foot fungus and is a very effective toenail fungus natural cure. Make sure you dry your feet once you take them out of the vinegar and water mixture. If you find that immersing your feet in water causes a skin irritation, soak your feet only twice or thrice in the week or add more water to the mixture.
Hydrogen peroxide is another treatment for toenail fungal infection. Make a solution of hydrogen peroxide and soak for feet in it for approximately 30 minutes thrice a day. The last soak should be done just before you go to bed. Continue doing this till the fungus is completely dead. Another important foot fungus home remedy that is quite effective is soaking your feet in a tea tree oil solution for some time. The tea tree oil has anti-fungal properties that helps kill the fungus. Continue with this method twice daily for a couple of days for quick relief from the fungus. Here are a few tips to help prevent you getting toenail fungus:
- Wear comfortable shoes that help your feet to breathe and prevent the formation of excess moisture.
- Trim your nails properly. Make sure that you do not trim them too close to the skin or make them grow too long.
- While walking in public showers or locker rooms wear protective shoes or sandals.
- Dust your feet with some talcum powder.
- If you need to get a pedicure done use your own kit.
- Treat problems such as athlete’s foot immediately before it spreads to other parts of the body.
A natural treatment for toenail fungal infection is inappropriate in cases where the fungus has spread to other parts of the body. If you find that this happens it is best to consult your health care practitioner.

Good old fashion Listerine. Soak your nail in Listerine couple of times a day. Do not dilute it, use it straight up. It works. I had the problem for years and I finally can see the results. JT
