Triticum 

Triticum is an herb that is found in the wheat family. This is a hardy, perennial herb that can grow up to the height of 1.5 m. It is found in most countries in the Northern hemisphere. There are many more popular versions of this herb like triticum aestivum or wheatgrass. Wheatgrass has gained a lot of popularity in the newer, healthier lifestyles and has many health benefits. There are other triticum herbs like triticum sativum or triticum vulgare both of which are also known as bread wheat.

Triticum contains tritcin which is a polyfructosan. You will also find soluble silicic acid and sugar alcohols in the herb. This herb also contains volatile oils that are used in different treatments.

Health Benefits and Therapeutic Uses


  • The oil extracted from triticum can be used in antimicrobial treatments.
  • This oil or some parts of rhizome that are medicinally relevant are used in treatments for kidney infections or urinary tract infections.
  • This herb is also used in cough remedies.
  • The infusion of the leaves can be drunk like a tea and is often used in alternate therapies for constipation.
  • The fructose content of plant has also been used in creating sweetener substitutes for diabetes.
  • The tender stems of the plant triticum vulgare are used to treat intoxication.
  • The fruits of bread wheat or triticum vulgare are used as a sedative and an antipyretic.
  • The seeds of bread wheat can be cooked as a grain and is often used in flours to make bread as it is gluten-rich, much like wheat.
  • This seed is also used in fertility treatments especially in women. It can also be used to treat night sweats and excessive sweating.

Other Uses


  • Bread wheat is an herb that has also used to produce biogas. It can also be used to make paper. The seeds give out a starch which can be used commercially.
There are no recorded side effects of this particular herb. There is, however, a contraindication. If you suffer from any kidney infection or any existing cardiac problem, you should not try a flushing out therapy with this herb.
