Hair loss or baldness is a common problem found in men. But it can be seen in women also. There are three major types of female hair loss such as androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata and traumatic alopecia. Female pattern hair loss is a type of hair loss caused due to inherited susceptibility. This problem is commonly seen after menopause. It is due to aging, family history and hormones. Female pattern hair loss is accompanied by some other signs of hormonal imbalance including excess facial or body hair. Hair loss can develop an inferiority complex in women as it is not socially accepted. Hence, it should be treated immediately.

There are several ways to treat the female pattern hair loss. Medication for hair loss treatment includes use of minoxidil. This FDA approved product stimulates the hair growth. Anthralin is another treatment option that changes the immune function in the affected skin.

Oral and topical estrogens are suggested by the physicians for treatment of female pattern hair loss. It is believed to regulate the hair growth if the hair loss is due to hormonal imbalance. Hormone replacement pills including Prempro, plus Aldactone can be used as a treatment option after menopause.

If the medication is not effective, then it is recommended to take the treatment of hair implants from the hair specialist. This procedure is performed in various sessions under the local anesthesia.

There are some preventive measures for the hair loss in women. Head massage using olive, almond and caster oil is quite advantageous. It stimulates the hair follicles and promotes hair growth. Have a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates, calcium, proteins, folic acid, vitamins such as B6, B12 and C and minerals. Avoid excess exposure to heat, wind and sun.
