Ways to Bring Down Cholesterol Without Drugs

by Kevin Pederson
Cholesterol has been seen as one of the most harmful substances present in the human body. In the recent times, it has been found that cholesterol has been the base cause of many of the lifestyle diseases that people suffer from. In fact, high cholesterol levels are detrimental to the health of the heart.

Dietary guidelines have set the normal LDL cholesterol values to be not more than 70, while previously the normal LDL cholesterol levels were pegged at 100.

According to most physicians, the only way to quickly lower LDL cholesterol before it begins to clog the arteries, is to take statin drugs. However, recent researches have shown that there are many other natural ways to deal with high levels of cholesterol. Apart from the pharmaceutical choices for lowering cholesterol, a minor change in lifestyle choices can also help lower cholesterol.

Since it is the lifestyle choices of a person that cause the cholesterol levels to build up in the first place, correcting the lifestyle choices can make a lot of difference in how the cholesterol levels built up in your body. It has also come to light that there may be certain foods that help lower the LDL cholesterol. By changing the food consumed on a regular basis and by exercising regularly, cholesterol levels can be lowered drastically. When these natural methods are employed, prescriptions drugs will no longer be necessary to lower cholesterol.

To begin making these lifestyle changes, there are two basic ingredients in the diet that should ideally be replaced by healthier alternatives. The first of these ingredients are hydrogenated oils. These are found in almost all baked goods, butter, and margarine. Store bought salad dressings and processed foods also contain these hydrogenated fats. These oils are extremely toxic to the human body and may disrupt the metabolism. Some such other common food ingredients which cause the disruption of metabolism are MSG, sodium nitrite, white or refined flour, and aspartame. Animal fat too, can be very harmful for the human body and the consumption of it, therefore, should be avoided.

Red meats are another source of cholesterol. Red meats, when prepared, usually have small trimmings of animal fat. The meats that you should instead be consuming are white meats and lean cuts. There are also certain healthy fats like olive oils and the oils derived from nuts like peanuts and cashews.

Other home ingredients that can help you lower your cholesterol levels are ginger, garlic, onions, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, barley, oats, and wheat berries. A high fiber diet is recommended for lowering cholesterol.
