What Is Arteriosclerosis?

by Kevin Pederson

The walls of arteries are affected by this chronic disease. These walls loose their elasticity due to the increase of plaque in the walls. Due to this there is thickening and hardening of the walls which proves to be a hindrance in blood circulation.

The people affected with this disease are usually ones who are ageing, with hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and other conditions too. One could not find oneself in this condition overnight. The thickening of the walls is a progress of several years which is due to increase amounts of calcium deposits in the walls making hard and brittle.

The areas affected are the cardiovascular system, the brain, kidneys, upper and lower extremities. Arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis are two different conditions which affect differently. Atherosclerosis is a build of fatty acids and leads to coronary heart disease, strokes and any other disorders occurring due to blood clots. Such disorders can lead to an increase in blood pressure.

Some of the causes which can lead to the doors of arteriosclerosis are hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking and obesity. Some of the details which should not be overlooked are some very common signs and symptoms such as high blood pressure, kidney infections, reduced blood circulation to the fingers and toes.

Some of the common precautions which can be taken are by taking treatment for your ailments such as high blood pressure, treatment of diabetes; avoid smoking, reducing your dietary calcium and increasing your magnesium, shedding some of those pounds which can create great problems.

What is arteriosclerosis? Arteriosclerosis is the thickening of the arterial wall, causing the wall to lose its elasticity. The arteriosclerosis definition refers to the thickening of arteries due to the deposit of cholesterol on the inner lining of the arteries.

The arteriosclerosis cardiovascular disease is a lifestyle related disease.  The causes and symptoms of arteriosclerosis are linked. Arteriosclerosis is caused by an increase in cholesterol which is usually caused by an unsound diet, excess smoking and drinking, hypertension, diabetes. It can also be due to hereditary reasons. The one common symptom for arteriosclerosis is pain. The pain is due blocked arteries. The pain can happen anywhere in the body but largely happens in the legs.

It can start as early as the teen years but the symptoms do not manifest till thirties, forties, even your fifties. Arteriosclerosis can even happen to people who do not show risky behavior like smoking or drinking, but the chances are considerably fewer.

There are different kinds of arteriosclerosis including coronary and cerebral arteriosclerosis. Coronary arteriosclerosis is the thickening of the walls of the arteries in the heart while cerebral arteriosclerosis is the thickening of the walls of the arteries in the brain.

Arteriosclerosis is also called coronary artery disease. The symptoms and treatment of coronary arteriosclerosis include basic procedures using dyes to a heart surgery and even a bypass depending on how serious the condition of coronary artery is. Cerebral arteriosclerosis also can be quite serious as it can reduce blood flow to the brain and cause a stroke. Thickened arterial walls in the brain can also lead to aneurysms which usually can rupture without any warning.

The arteriosclerosis treatment is usually a surgical procedure when it is a serious case. To prevent it, you need to improve the quality of your life like eating well, getting regular exercise, avoid smoking and drinking and any form of substance abuse and of course monitoring your symbols.

What is arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis?  Arteriosclerosis is often confused with atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the accumulation of cholesterol and other substances along the arterial wall. Arteriosclerosis is a result of atherosclerosis.

The main factors that contribute to the buildup in atherosclerosis are high density cholesterol, plaque and triglycerides. Because of a buildup of all these components in arteries, the walls start to thicken and lose elasticity, causing arteriosclerosis. Arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis are used interchangeably but there is a slight difference in the two.

Atherosclerosis is chronic and needs lifelong care. It includes improving your lifestyle to better the quality of life including eating well, exercising, resting and de-stressing life. It even includes controlling blood pressure. Natural remedies can help reduce the damage being caused by atherosclerosis but cannot eliminate them. The symptoms of atherosclerosis include plaque ruptures and clots in the arteries. Both these lead to narrowing of the arteries. It could eventually lead to reduced blood flow to the organ and require a surgical intervention.

What is arteriosclerosis obliterans? Arteriosclerosis obliterans is when a reduced blood flow due to blockage affects the circulation in the lower extremities and leads to various medical complications.  The reduced blood flow can lead severe nerve and tissue damage. It is also called the peripheral artery disease (PAD). Additional conditions that could increase chances of arteriosclerosis obliterans are hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. A symptom is a pale, cold tingly foot. That is a sign that you should get tests done.

Treatment for PAD largely includes drugs and surgery to remove clots, sometimes. Surgeries try to dissolve the clots and restore the blood flow to the affected limb. Occasionally, in serious cases of PAD, patients have even lost limbs after amputation.
