Tips To Avoid Middle Back Pain in Pregnancy

Back pain during pregnancy is usually not very alarming. This is probably because a number of women suffer from this problem during the course of their pregnancy and it is considered to be very common. This pain starts normally in the fifth to the seventh month of your pregnancy. It is important that you do not ignore the pain as it could lead to some long-term complications. This could mean that your daily lifestyle is affected or you are left in a bad shape post-pregnancy.

Taking care of this pain during your pregnancy will mean that you have a hassle free and smooth delivery. As you tend to put on at least 25% more weight during your pregnancy, this puts an additional burden on the weight bearing structures of your body, including your back. Due to this additional weight there is a change in the weight distribution pattern, which in turn causes a shift in the body’s centre of gravity. This leads to your back muscles being stressed.

Here are some tips to help keep that back pain at bay.

  • Make sure you do not slouch. Maintaining an appropriate and proper posture will help reduce the back pain.
  • If you are pregnant, avoid standing for a long time, especially when you are traveling or when at work.
  • Make sure that you also get adequate rest and sleep.
  • Wearing high heels will put a lot of stress on your back so avoid them at all costs.
  • Wear clothing that is loose and allows for the proper circulation of air.
  • Make sure you do not slump forward while sitting. This will result in your rib-cage being slumped forward down to the stomach. This will aggravate your back pain.
  • Stand comfortably and ensure that your knees are kept soft.
  • Nothing helps more than tips from relatives and friends who have gone through this problem.
  • Practice yoga and try relaxing your diaphragm using various breathing techniques.

In addition to all this, it is best that you also go to your doctor and discuss the problem with him or her.

We have to remember that while it may not be possible to completely do away with pain in the back during pregnancy, it can be properly managed. There has to be a constant effort on your part to maintain your posture. When this is coupled with proper exercises and body mechanics you can be assured of a smooth pregnancy.
