White hair or graying of hair is quite common with age. Sometimes it even occurs prematurely. Only when it occurs prematurely, does one have to do something about it.


Some of the reasons you get premature gray hair is prolonged stress, anxiety and tension; severe illness like typhoid; the excessive intake of tea, coffee, alcohol, fried and oily foods, spices, sour and acidic foods; and a deficiency of copper which in turn reduces production of melanin. White hair can also be caused by a misbehaving pituitary gland. Hereditary also plays an important role in graying of hair. A reduction in sebum can increase the gray. As you age, your body stops producing melanin. Melanin is responsible for the color of your hair. Therefore, the hair starts to turn white.

White hair can be treated with treatment. You can get rid of white hair naturally. You can get rid of white hair with a combination of home remedies to cure white hair. Lemon juice mixed with gooseberry juice applied repeatedly can help to prevent white hair. Drinking buttermilk with yeast and wheat germ mixed in it can help stop premature graying. Applying gooseberry juice mixed with coconut oil can really help the hair. Eating one teaspoon of honey and ginger does wonders for the hair. Onion paste applied on the scalp helps to prevent graying. Eating sesame seed sweetmeats and applying sesame oil on the scalp has also been known to help. Cook some dried ridge gourd in coconut till it turns black. Then apply this oil on your scalp to help reduce white hair. Table salt mixed with black tea makes an excellent lotion to apply on your scalp to reduce white hair.

Amaranth is also known for keeping hair healthy. It is used an excellent white hair treatment as well as to promote lustrous hair growth. Fresh homemade butter scrubbed into the roots has been known to help prevent white hair. A mixture of blackstrap molasses, brewers’ yeast and wheat germ have been known to reduce appearance of white hair. Curry leaves boiled in coconut oil and then application of that coconut oil is considered very beneficial to the scalp. It even helps if you liberally eat curry leaves in your daily food, along with chewing on a few curry leaves first thing in the morning. You can use oil mixed with hibiscus leaves for better textured and colored hair.

You can also improve the condition of your hair by eating well. Eat a diet rich in protein, iron, minerals, vitamins and iodine. Increase dark green vegetables, fresh leafy vegetables, carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and apricots, cereals, meat and soy, bananas, fish and nuts. You should also reduce the intake of white items, like white flour, white sugar and white grains in your diet. If your gray hair is accompanied by severe drying skin and you losing weight then you need to change your diet quickly. You should also start consuming cod liver oil and applying castor oil to your hair at least once every two weeks.

Thyroid disorders like hypothyroid and hyperthyroid can also play a role in premature graying. So if all other causes are ruled out and you are still continuing to turn gray, you should get a blood test to check your thyroid. In case diabetes runs in your family, sometimes the malfunctioning pituitary gland also causes premature graying. You could ask your doctor to run the tests for you. In certain very rare cases, there is a complete lack of melanin which is also another form of anemia and this results in early graying.
