Urinary incontinence is the medical name given to the problem you are suffering from. Depending upon your age and the general condition of your health, this may or may not be completely normal. For instance, if you are over the age of 65, this could happen.
If you are female and have just had a vaginal delivery, then too this is completely normal. In either and all cases, there is help at hand. And you do not even have to pay for it. A basic form of exercises can be performed in order to strengthen the muscles of the urinary tract and opening. Most of the time, it is these muscles that become flaccid over age and time and then it becomes difficult to control urination. With recent vaginal deliveries, too, this muscle has been stretched to beyond its capacities and can therefore become weak for a while. A simple Yoga exercise will help to fully regain muscular control in this region. Known as Ashwini mudra, this is an asana that could be performed any time, anywhere and in any posture. You would have to slowly and steadily contract your anal and rectal muscles tightly till you can do it no further. Hold this posture to the count of 10 and then slowly release these muscles. After an interval that also lasts to the count of 10, you can contract them again. This should be done repeatedly in order to develop muscular strength.
This is one of the most powerful ways to regain both bowel as well as urinary control. Apart from this, you could also start to adopt a few habits that would help you out in the long run. To start with, you need to urinate each time till the very last drop has come out of the kidneys. If this means spending an extra couple of minutes on the toilet, this should not pose to be a problem. Another thing you can do is set up a schedule. Set an alarm clock to go off and go every alternate hour. This should be done irrespective of whether you want to go at that time or not. Not only will this regular your urinary cycle after about a month or so, it will also ensure that there are no unseemly accidents. Keep in mind that if you are recovering from a vaginal delivery, then this process will automatically take its own time. All you can do is help matters along.
