Preventing Bronchiectasis with Diet

by Shaun Damon

Bronchiectasis is the medical term given to the ailment that arises when certain areas of bronchi (the tubes through which we breathe) are expanded due to severe damage to its wall. Bronchiectasis is caused due to several reasons. The most common reason is recurring infection in the respiratory system. Weak immune system is another reason that leads to this problem. Inhaling fumes, dust, smoke, gases too causes this problem. The bronchi are lined with cells that contain a substance known as cilia. Cilia makes sure that the mucus does not get accumulated in the bronchi. When these cilia containing cells are damaged, mucus starts accumulating in the bronchi leading to the widening of the passage and the thriving of bacteria. This in turn damages the bronchi further.

Bronchiectasis mostly affects those bronchi that are medium in size. The process that leads to bronchiectasis usually begins at a very young age with the symptoms appearing at a later stage in life. Some of the symptoms of this problem are wheezing, inability to breathe normally, lethargy, fatigue, coughing up blood, recurring fever, constant pain near the chest, and so on.Since cold, cough, and weak immune system are the main causes of this problem, it is necessary to eliminate these causes at the earliest to ensure that the situation does not get worse. However, if the condition has set in and the situation is severe, then consult a qualified physician immediately as proper check-up and subsequent medical treatment is needed.

Along with this, make it a point to avoid inhaling any kind of toxic fumes, smoke, gases, or even dust. Do not take any drugs that will suppress the cold or the mucus from coming out. This will just worsen the situation. Calcium fluoride is known to give back the tissues their elasticity and calcium phosphate is known to strengthen the tissues. Ensuring that your diet includes both these calcium will help in reducing the expansion of the bronchi and subsequently strengthening its walls. Vitamin C is an excellent immunity booster and helps in reducing mucus, where as vitamin A helps in preventing any infection from setting in. Including an extra dose of these vitamins in your diet will help in taking care of this problem. Cod liver oil helps in absorbing calcium. If you are going to increase your intake of calcium than it would be a good idea to start using or eating cod liver oil.
