Flaky Scalp
Dry flaky scalp can happen because of dandruff. What is dandruff? On a daily basis, our scalp sheds dead skin cells. When the scalp shed too much of dead skin cells, then these cells slump together and form grey or white flakes, which are known as dandruff. Itchy flaky scalp is caused by dandruff that is caused due to an oily or dry scalp. There is a fungus known as pityrosporum ovale that is responsible for causing dandruff. Too much of sebum, the oil that is secreted from the glands that are present in the skin, can trigger of this fungus.
Causes of dry flaky scalp:
• You might notice that dandruff is often triggered off during puberty and this is due to hormonal fluctuations.
• Flaky scalp caused by dandruff can even be a family trait.
• If you eat food that is too spicy with a lot of salt and sugar, and drink large quantities of alcohol, then it can trigger of dandruff too.
• Climatic conditions can even cause dandruff.
• Stress is another factor for flaky scalp.
• Nutritional deficiencies can cause dandruff too. If your diet is short on vitamin B or essential fatty acids, then it can cause dandruff.
• Seborrhoeic eczema is also known to cause flaky, itchy patches on the scalp.
Treatment for flaky scalp:
• You might like to use anti-dandruff shampoos for treating dandruff on a regular basis. You may even have to use several shampoos before deciding on the one that can be of maximum help.
• If the dandruff problem is persistent, then you can think of salicylic acid too. You can even mix zinc or selenium in coconut oil and use the oil for flaky scalp treatment.
• Anti-fungal shampoo is another one of flaky scalp remedies. We suggest you speak to a hair care therapist and ask him/her to recommend one.
Dry and Flaky Scalp Prevention:
• To prevent dandruff and flaky scalp, we suggest you massage your scalp gently while shampooing. Scratching vigorously can worsen the situation.
• Make sure that you rinse and wash your hair well after shampooing. Also, choose a shampoo that will suit your skin.
• Alternate an anti-dandruff shampoo with your usual shampoo.
• You must eat food that is rich in zinc, selenium, and vitamins B12, B6, and E. Try flaxseed oil as this can prevent dandruff.
When should you see your doctor: If you’ve tried these preventive steps as well as treatment options, and you still feel that your dandruff problem is as severe as it was earlier, then you may need to go to a dermatologist. If your scalp is inflamed, red, extremely itchy, or painful, then you might need a different treatment.
