Home remedies for a smashed finger Movement of the finger is restricted, as the probability of a fracture is present. Place a splinter or any stick and tie the finger with a thread or gauze. This prevents movement of the finger.
Application of a cold pack is advantageous, as it prevents inflammation of the finger. If you fail to find a splinter, tape the finger with the adjacent finger, so that the latter acts as a support. Application of pressure in the affected area helps in controlling the bleeding. Placing the hand in a raised level, above the heart, slows the outflow of bleeding. A clean and dry gauze is used to cover the injury, as first-aid. This avoids further infection. Any loosely attached foreign objects are removed. For less severe injuries, place the finger under tap water and apply and anti bacterial ointment. Restrain from removal of any firmly adhered objects, such as glass embedded in the injured finger. The acronym 'RICE' (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) is to be considered. Exercise and stretching of the finger is done after treatment. This is done under the guidance of your physician or physiotherapist.
