Eye allergy occurs when our eyes overreact to an allergen which it perceives to be harmful, although it may be not. Common signs and symptoms of eye allergy include itchy eyes, red eyes, swollen tearing eyes, sneezing, itchy nose or a headache. Eye allergy can be airborne that is the pollutants like pollen, dust, mold or pet dander are the common examples.

Other causes include some food allergies or bee stings. Eye allergies can also be caused due to some cosmetics or due to adverse effects of certain drugs. It is very important to identify the triggering factors for eye allergies.

Once identified the treatment would be simpler. If not diagnosed yet, consult an ophthalmologist (an eye doctor) who would help you with the same. Try these simple tips to reduce the allergy symptoms -

  • Minimize the clutter in your room where the allergens tend to get collected. Keep your house clean and neat.
  • Never rub your itching eyes as this can worsen the allergy.
  • Wear sunglasses when you step outdoors to minimize further spread of infection.
  • Avoid other irritants like pet dander, pollen or weeds.
  • To reduce the allergic symptoms use cold compresses.
