The infestation of pinworms is very common in the United States, not just in adults, but also in children and toddlers. This is probably why several people check with their doctors for medical treatment or natural remedies for pinworms. However, the treatment for pinworms can be a long and complex procedure, as the entire family needs to undergo the treatment at the same time.
Therefore, it is important for people to understand the ways in which the infestation can be prevented and controlled.
How do you get pinworms in humans?
Several people wonder “how do you get pinworms” and even ask their doctors the same question, especially after someone gets infested in the family. It is actually quite easy for pinworms to get passed on from one person to another, especially children. The most common way of acquiring a pinworm is by swallowing their egg accidentally. These eggs are normally carried to a person’s mouth, through food and beverages that are contaminated. These eggs usually hatch within the intestines and adult pinworms are developed within a matter of weeks. The female pinworms then crawl to the anus, where they lay their eggs, which is the main cause of itchiness. This in turn causes a person to scratch the area, transferring the eggs to the fingers and from there on to other surfaces like clothes, towels, bedspreads, and so on. These pinworm eggs can survive on such surfaces for a couple of weeks and hence, they can easily be passed on to other members of the family, who touch these surfaces and then their mouths.
Pinworm Symptoms
In most cases, the pinworm symptoms in adults and babies include:
- Intermittent pain in the abdomen
- Severe itchiness in the anal region
- Nausea
- Irritability and restless, especially during the night, which leads to sleeping difficulties
One of the pinworm symptoms in women could also include itchiness in the vaginal area. However, several people may not have any pinworm symptoms, in spite of being infected.
Home Remedies for Pinworms
Most people prefer first trying home remedies for pinworms in children, to avoid any adverse effects that medication could have. The first step towards the treatment for pinworms in toddlers and children, or even adults, is following strict hygienic measures. Hence, the child’s clothes, linen, toys, utensils and any other objects that the child utilizes need to be sterilized a couple of times each day. Moreover, the child should be made to wash hands often, to prevent the eggs from spreading. Some of the other effective home remedies for pinworms in adults and children include:
- Eating a small portion of garlic, either cooked or raw. For children, the garlic can be mixed with honey.
- Make a mixture using petroleum jelly of a good brand and some crush garlic. This mixture can be applied directly on to the anus, in order to kill the worms as well as the eggs. This home remedy is also said to bring about immediate relief.
- The consumption of freshly grated coconut, followed by some castor oil after two to three hours is believed to be very effective.
In case these home remedies do not prove to be very effective, it may be necessary to speak to a doctor, for the right medication. However, the medicines used in the treatment of pinworms could evoke mild gastrointestinal side effects.
While most of the home remedies for pinworms in children and adults mentioned above are quite safe, if used correctly, it is best to consult a doctor, before trying any of them. In addition to that, in case a pregnant woman suffers from an infestation, it is best for her to consult a doctor and undergo proper treatment for pinworms during pregnancy.
