I have a serious acid reflux. when asleep the acid comes up and burns my mouth on the outside causing my skin to become crusted, this is very painful. Can you help.

Acid reflux is more than just another annoying problem as it can have very serious repercussions. Acid reflux ahs been linked to an increase in the risk of gastrointestinal cancers as well as several other related disorders. In order to get rid of this problem permanently, you will have to make a few changes to your daily habits. These changes would include a change in your diet as well as an inclusion of exercise in your daily schedule. There are also several other smaller adjustments that you can make to obtain relief from acid reflux and its painful symptoms.

You will have to eat several small meals during the day instead of larger meals. You will also have to cut down drastically or completely eliminate junk food and fried foods from your meals. A high fiber diet will help to manage this condition and so you should include at least one serving of fruits or vegetables in every meal. Buttermilk is also effective in preventing excessive acidity within the stomach as it helps to neutralize stomach acids. Have a glass of buttermilk after every meal to reduce your risk of acid reflux. After your meals, go for a short stroll as this will promote digestion. Do not lie down immediately after eating as this will cause the acids from your stomach to back up. You should also exercise on a daily basis as this will help to increase your metabolic rate and decrease your chances of experiencing an episode. You can also elevate the upper portion of your bed so that you are sleeping on a slight incline. This simple step will go a long way in preventing acid reflux. Make sure that you have your last meal at least two to three hours before you go to bed. You should also make sure that this is a light meal as a heavy meal will increase your chances of acidity.

You have mentioned that you are experiencing skin problems around your mouth. The crusting that you have mentioned will disappear once the acid reflux attacks stop. You can apply petroleum jelly to the entire area around your mouth before you go to bed as this will help to protect your skin from the acid. You can mix a little olive oil and coconut oil and massage it into your skin during the day. This will help to fortify and protect your skin. If this problem persists, visit your doctor in case there is an underlying cause for your acid reflux.
