Stomach Acid Problems

Digestive problems are rather common today because of the change that our lifestyle has undergone. When the stomach produces too little acid or too much of it, the body has difficulty digesting food properly. Stomach acid, also known as gastric acid, is a vital chemical produced in the body in order to digest food.


The acid produced in the stomach mainly consists of hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride. Usually, the normal pH of the stomach is not acidic. The stomach creates the acid in order to allow digestion to occur smoothly.


This acid helps break down the food that we consume. As the gastric acid reduces or increases in the body, indigestion is often experienced. There are many health problems that are related directly to stomach acid problems.

Since the stomach creates its own acid for digestion, excess stomach acid can problems are a common affair. One of the biggest stomach acid problems is that an excess of it, could cause the acid to flow back into the esophagus, causing heart burn, acidity, and possible damage to the esophagus. Excess acid in the body causes a burning sensation in the stomach and may even lead to gastric ulcers as well as gastritis. There are also conditions in which the stomach produces little or no acids. When the stomach produces very low quantity of acids, the condition is known as hypochlorhydria, and when it produces absolutely no acid, it is known as achlorhydria.

Stomach acid causes: Bad dietary habits and malnutrition are the primary causes of stomach acid problems. Substance abuses, especially with alcohol and tobacco, may also cause an increase in the amount of gastric acid produced in the stomach. The increasing or decreasing amount of gastric acids being synthesized in the stomach may also be attributed to stress. The presence of a bacteria named helicobacter pylori, often referred to as H.Pylori, is also a cause of increased acid production in the body. The bacteria may cause the stomach to lose the ability to gauge the amount of acid needed in the body. It causes the body to produce excessive acid, therefore causing acid reflux.

Stomach acid symptoms.If there is an imbalance in the acid produced in the stomach, the body reacts to it immediately and you would definitely notice certain stomach acid symptoms. There are many symptoms that the body may experience, some of which include burning, belching, bloating, and flatulence. Heartburn, accompanied with a sharp tightening sensation in the chest, is also very common. Even if you have not eaten well, the body may feel full. You may also experience nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea, or constipation. The stools may often contain undigested foods as well. You may also continue to feel uneasy, without knowing why you feel that way. The symptoms of excess acid in stomach may fast become aggravated. If they are chronic in nature, this could be indicative of a dangerous underlying condition. Doctors usually recommend a stool analysis that is rather comprehensive in nature. Some of the remedies you could try in order to reduce stomach acid are
  • Lower your stress levels as stress can cause excessive production of gastric juices;
  • Consume several small meals instead of a few large ones;
  • Ensure that the foods you eat are high in complex carbohydrates;
  • Avoid aerated drinks and alcohol;
  • Avoid fried and other fatty foods; and
  • Drink lots of water and fresh fruit juices.
Stomach acid treatment may often be necessary to get relief. If you are looking for stomach acid relief, it may be necessary for you to visit a doctor and get a full checkup. Not getting a checkup may cause an aggravation of the problem, ultimately leading to complications of your health.
