Gas, is a very common and often embarrassing problem that the majority of the problem faces. Gas related problems lead to stomach bloating after eating, abdominal discomfort and pain, frequent belching with a foul odour and passage of the gas from the rectal area, also known as "farting." Gas is created in the gastrointestinal tract when carbohydrates present in the sugars and starches in the food, are not broken down in the process of digestion. These carbohydrates pass into the colon, where they ferment leading to the production of gases. Gases are also produced due to lactose intolerance, lack of sufficient fibre in the diet and lack of exercise. It also happens when you are eating fast without chewing properly and thus swallowing excessive air which builds up in the abdominal region.

The best way to reduce gas in the abdominal tract and this gas related problems is to watch the diet and ensure that you are not consuming foods that cause gas. Avoid foodstuff including broccoli, beans, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, onions, whole wheat flour, cauliflower, radishes, apricots, bananas, pretzels and so on which lead to production of gas. Also avoid chewing candy or gum since this makes you swallow more air. For relief from gas chew around 1 tbsp of fennel seeds after your meals. A dash of asafoetida, mixed in warm water also provides much respite from gas. You can also add half teaspoon of dry ginger powder and rock salt to this mixture for best results. Drinking a glass of water with a dash of baking soda and some lemon juice helps to release the gas instantly providing relief from the discomfort. Chamomile tea assists to cure digestion and releases the gas trapped in the abdominal tract, providing relief within minutes. For an infant suffering from gas, keep the child in an upright movement, moving around, patting the back to aid the release of gas. You can also apply a pinch of asafoetida mixed in coconut oil around the child's belly button.
