Meaning of Enema

Enema is a method of introducing liquids into the rectum and colon through the anus. This introduction of liquid is essential when toxic substances accumulate in the liver and colon. These accumulated substances are circulated in the whole body through the blood stream, causing harm to various body organs. In such a case, enema plays its role and protects the body from harmful effects of toxic substances.

Enemas are basically categorized into retention enema and cleansing enema. Retention enema is also known as suppositories and is retained in the body for about 10-15 minutes. This category of enema stays in the body for few minutes to remove all impurities from the liver. At the other end, cleansing enemas are also retained for few minutes and then they perform their function of cleaning the colon and removing all the impurities present in the colon.

In case, your body experiences tension or spasms in the bowel, use warm water, 99 degree F being the most appropriate temperature. And, if your bowel is weak, the try colder water falling between the temperatures of 75-80 degree F. warm water helps to relax the bowel whereas cold water provides increased strength.

Consult a good physician, if you have any kind of rectal bleeding.
