Cholesterol is essential in the body for making steroid hormones and nerve fibers. The amount of cholesterol required for certain functions can be achieved from the body itself. However, it becomes dangerous when we add cholesterol into the body. Increase in cholesterol occurs due to increase intake of animal foods like eggs, meat, dairy products and junk foods like burgers, pizza, steaks and ice-cream. Excess of cholesterol can block the arterial walls leading to heart attack and stroke as well as various heart diseases. A cholesterol greater than 240 mg\dl is dangerous.

The main objective of reducing cholesterol levels are reducing the LDL (low density Lipoprotein) levels or bad cholesterol which is a main transporter of cholesterol and can clog the arteries and lead to heart disease and increasing the HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) levels or good cholesterol that can remove the LDL and is thus beneficial.

Various home remedies of reducing cholesterol are:-
  • Physical activity is essential. It tends to lower the LDL levels and can reduce the flab from the body. Patients suffering from heart disease need to consult a doctor and a trainer before starting any exercise regime.
  • Cut down animal foods and stress on having vegeteranian foods. Animal foods contain more of cholesterol whereas vegetables and fruits contain no cholesterol. Moreover plant foods contain phyto chemicals like carotene, flavonoids or allicin that can reduce the cholesterol content. Certain foods like oat bran, apple or kidney and navy beans contain soluble fibre that can help in lowering cholesterol and sugar levels.
  • Cut down the intake of saturated fats like butter, clarified butter, cream as it can raise the cholesterol levels. Have more of vegetable oils, nuts and grains as it contains Vitamin E which is an antioxidant and avoids oxidation of LDL cholesterol thus avoiding occurrence of arteriosclerosis.
  • Avoid large meals instead have few frequent meals containing fruits, vegetable, sprouts and whole grains distributed proportionately as it can reduce the level of insulin thus depressing the formation of enzyme that can increase cholesterol formation in the liver.
Extracts from curry leaf tree can have the potential to lower sugar level by reducing the formation of enzyme called pancreatic alpha amylase that can breakdown the starch to glucose. As a result the amount of glucose entering the bloodstream gets slowed down.
