Have you stopped breast-feeding? How long did you breast-feed your child? The breast continues to secrete milk, even after stopping feeding from the breast. It is the best way to provide nutrients to a child. Breast-feeding ensures healthy development and growth of the child. The hormones prolactin and oxytocin help in milk stimulation. This is mainly due to the suckling reflex action of the child. The child has to be provided with mother's milk, at least for the first six months. Breast-feeding till the second year is essential for the baby. Even after the child stops the suckling it refluxes. The breast continues to secrete milk for a few days, after which the process slowly stops, putting the breast back in position. Nursing is a natural way of contraception. It is also a cost-effective procedure. It also reduces the risk of breast cancer in the lactating mothers. Mothers suffering from hepatitis, herpes infection and HIV infection should restrain from breast-feeding. Some women develop mastitis, a condition which rises, due to the clogging of milk. Visit to your gynaecologist is recommended.
