One must be very careful with cold remedies while breastfeeding. There is an old saying that a cold lasts a week with medication and seven days without it. But for a new mum who is breastfeeding that might seem like a long time.
For one thing, taking medication, especially antibiotics is a bit dangerous without your doctor/ paediatrician's approval, for another, your proximity to the baby may cause you to pass on germs to your precious bundle. First of all, protect your baby from infection by tying a scarf around your nose and mouth while nursing. Simple rules of hygiene also help - always wash your hands before feeding or changing the baby, keep him/her away from handkerchiefs.
Change linen often and (this is tough) avoid kissing the baby.
Since some amount of everything that the mother consumes makes its way into breast milk, natural remedies may well be the safest option for nursing mums when it comes to treating colds. Gargle with warm salt water at least three times a day.
Steam inhalation is one of the best cold remedies while breastfeeding. Using this, you can safely and effectively get relief from your cold. For this, boil water in a pot. Remove from heat and stand over it with a towel placed over your head and inhale deeply. You could use plain steam or try adding a few drops of eucalyptus or peppermint oil. Hot soups and broths also help and are anyway good and strengthening for new mothers. If you eat meat, try a soup with chicken or mutton stock. Natural and herbal teas, such as ginger tea and chamomile tea also help with colds. A head and face massage might help relieve congestion and pain if you're suffering from sinusitis. Avoid drinking cold water, cool drinks, or other cold foods. Finally, try and get as much rest as you can - though this may understandably be hard with a demanding new baby.
If your symptoms persist beyond two weeks, consult you doctor, as it may be an allergy that you're suffering from and not a cold. Also, in case of a very severe chest congestion, you may have to ask your doctor for medications that will be safe as cold remedies while breastfeeding. Please remember that you should not stop breastfeeding your baby while you're sick. Your breast milk contains enzymes that will protect your baby from infection. It also a known fact now that breast milk strengthens immunity. So unless you are seriously ill and have been asked by your doctor to stop, continue to nurse your child.
