What is chronic hives?

There are several people across the globe known to suffer from a skin condition known as hives, which is characterized by raised welts on the skin. These welts usually appear in batches and are often red and itchy.

In most people, this condition gets resolved within a couple of weeks or less. However, in some people, hives could become a long term or a chronic problem. Hence, Chronic Hives also referred to as Urticaria, can be described as a case of hives, which lasts for more than six weeks. In some people, hives could recur quite frequently; this occurrence has also been termed as chronic hives.

Studies indicate that hives in children and adults is very common; it has been estimated that around 15% to 20% of the total population in the United States will have suffered from acute hives or chronic hives at some point or the other, during their life. Although this condition can affect people of all ages, it has been seen that instances of chronic hives are more common in adults, than it is in children. However, children seem to be more prone of short term cases of acute hives. Therefore, chronic hives in children is not as common as it is in adults.

Causes of Chronic Hives

It is not always easy to identify the causes of chronic hives in children or adults. However, this condition generally occurs when histamines and other chemicals enter the bloodstream, which in turn causes a leak in the small blood vessels. The factors that could trigger such a condition are still not clear. However, several medical health care providers claim that chronic hives is a result of an autoimmune disorder. Hence, there are reports about the correlation between chronic hives and hypothyroidism or lupus. Moreover, it is believed that chronic hives in children is caused by virus.

Some of the other possible chronic hives causes are:
  • Bacteria
  • Excessive exposure to the cold, heat, sun or water
  • Foods like milk, berries, milk, fish and chocolate
  • Fungus
  • Insect bites
  • Medication
  • Other diseases
  • Pets
  • Strenuous physical exercise or pressure
  • Stress
  • The use of deodorants and perfumes
  • Viral infections
Chronic Hives Symptoms

In most cases, it is possible to see chronic hives on the face or the extremities. Small round rings or wheals and large patches could appear on the facial skin and the skin on the body. They are usually very itchy and may be surrounded by a red flare. Usually individual hives can last anywhere between 30 minutes and hours 36 hours. As the old hives disappear, newer ones may come up. Unfortunately, most people mistake chronic hives for a heat rash, or a rash caused by stress or exertion. However, people suffering from chronic hives should seek emergency medical attention if they experience symptoms like:
  • Lightheadedness
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Swelling in the throat
Chronic Hives Treatment

It is quite a challenge, to find the right treatment for hives and itching. If factors such as medication, food and other physical stimulus have lead to the condition, the first step in the treatment for hives rash would involve avoiding the triggers completely. However, in case an underlying medical problem has lead to the condition, then the treatment for hives may be quite different. For example, in case the cause of chronic hives is thyroid, the person may first need to undergo thyroid treatment, which should cure hives too. Medical experts generally recommend the use of certain over the counter and prescription medicines, to control the different chronic hives symptoms. However, medication should never be taken, without prior consultation with a doctor. Given below are some of the common medicines that are suggested for hives relief:
  • Epinephrine
  • H2 antagonists
  • Oral corticosteroids
  • Tri-cyclic antidepressants
Natural Remedies for Hives

Most people prefer using home remedies for hives, in addition to medical treatment options. However, the home remedies are aimed more at controlling the itchiness or the other symptoms. Given below are some of the most common natural remedies for hives in children and adults:
  • Ice is a wonderful remedy for most skin related problems, including hives. An ice pack should be used on the skin, at least 3 or 4 times a day, to alleviate the itchiness and the rash.
  • Keep the area that has been affected wrapped up. An elastic bandage can be used or protective clothing can be used to keep the area covered. However, the bandages should not be too tight, or they could aggravate the rash further.
  • A cold milk compress is usually very effective in soothing eruptions of chronic hives on the face or other parts of the body. A piece of cloth, dipped in milk, should be placed on the skin for at least 10 to 15 minutes. However, the milk that is used should not be ice-cold or else it could freeze the skin.
  • Baking soda is an excellent remedy for skin itchiness caused by several conditions. Doctors advise people to soak in a tub of cool water, to which two cups of baking soda has been added. Oatmeal is as effective as baking soda and could be used in a similar manner.
  • In case the cause of chronic hives is stress, the use of stress relieving techniques such as Yoga, meditation, deep breathing, acupuncture and so on. Several people go for regular head and body massages too, to relieve the symptoms of chronic hives.
  • In many instances, chronic hives is caused by nothing more than dry skin. Keeping the skin well moisturized at all times can help reduce the itchiness as well as the rash. However, many anti-itch creams and lotions can worsen the condition. Therefore, it is best to use petroleum jelly on the affected area, to reduce the itchiness.
  • Drinking cups of warm herbal tea can work as an excellent relaxant and therefore, can help relieve chronic hives due to stress. However, this may not be proper for children.
While most of the home remedies mentioned above are relatively safe for adults, as well as children, it is best to consult a doctor before using any of them.
