How Weight Loss Benefits Health

by Sam Malone

Being overweight does not only make one look and feel unpleasant but it also results in a number of health hazards. The risk of ailments like hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, strokes, and heart diseases is very high in overweight people. An increase in cholesterol and triglycerides, and a decrease in the flow of oxygen to the heart cause strokes and heart diseases, the two diseases that lead to a great number of deaths. Often, strokes and heart diseases do now show any warnings or signs in overweight people, thus preventing them from undergoing a treatment. Even if an overweight person loses approximately 10 percent of his weight, he will be avoiding all the above-mentioned health risks to a great extent.

Losing weight decreases a person's chances of suffering from Type 2-Diabetes (non-insulin dependent) by two times, as healthy weight keeps the blood sugar levels in check. Hypertension is also a disease that is associated with excess weight. It can result in heart and kidney failure if not taken care of in time. So, weight loss is beneficial in preventing cardiac arrest and kidney failure too. Overweight people are also at a greater risk of suffering from various forms of cancer like the cancer of colon, prostate, and rectum in men, and the cancer of the cervix, breasts, ovary, the colon, the gall bladder, and the uterus in women.

If a person is overweight, feels sluggish, and suffers from sleeplessness, losing weight would be the answer to all the problems. Weight loss ensures that a person sleeps better and feels rested and fresh. A condition called osteoarthritis affects the joints in the hips, lower back and knees because of the pressure of excess weight falling on these parts. So, losing weight would mean a decrease in the stress on joints and getting rid of the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Losing weight also prevents diseases like gout, kidney stones, gallstones, cirrhosis, sterility, and varicose veins. Being in good shape also increases the energy levels and improves mobility. Maintaining a healthy diet that comprises of natural foods instead of processed and fast food is one of the most effective ways of losing weight. Avoid sugary and oily food, white flour, white rice, and potatoes to lose weight. A workout regime like jogging, brisk walking, and stretching exercises for 20 minutes about five days a week is also highly beneficial. Drinking at least 10 glasses of water, preferably warm, also helps in losing weight.
