Techniques to Sleep Better

by Thomas Zudrell

There are as many solutions as causes for the problem of sleeplessness. Considered a necessary evil of urbanization, sleeplessness can be taken care of by addressing the root cause of the problem. Sometimes, this can happen because of a change in lifestyle or eating habits. At other times, sleeplessness can be the result of heightened stress levels at work. In a lot of cases, it can be something as simple as not having a suitable bed, pillow, or even clothes to sleep in, that can cause poor or disturbed sleep. In a few cases, there may be an actual physical disorder that is interfering with the body's ability to get proper rest. Once the reason has been determined, it becomes relatively easier to come forth with a solution too. In the case of something like a lifestyle change, it is imperative to give the body time to adapt to the changes that have come about. This can sometimes take as long as a month or so. In order to help things along in these cases, an attempt can be made to incorporate something like a new exercise regimen. Very often, a good session of exercise in the mornings can be helpful in tiring the body and promoting sleep. You can exercise later in the day too, but remember to avoid strenuous exercise too close to bed time, as this will only make sleep more difficult.

If there is some sort of emotional upheaval, joining a support group could be of some help. Apart from this, meditation can also be useful in helping to improve sleep patterns and overcome such upheavals. Yoga is an excellent way to conquer the mind as well as the body. It would be advisable to start training under the aegis of a good instructor and take the course to an advanced level slowly and gradually. Some good practices would also be include eating light and healthier meals, as these would be extremely helpful in allowing the system to rest and be at peace. In fact, it is advisable to not eat after about 9 pm at all. If a meal has been skipped, it is better to have milk and fruit than to eat a full meal that late. If none of these methods work well, try to change the bedding or pillows currently in use. It is possible that the problem may lie there. Simple things like ensuring the room is dark and quiet will also help.
