Pustular Psoriasis

People experiencing visible raised bumps on their skin that are filled with pustules or pus may have a skin disease called pustular psoriasis. A large portion of skin around and under the bumps is reddened. This form of psoriasis is uncommon. In fact only about 7.46 people in Japan per 1,000,000 experience it. This affects all kinds of races in the world, both men and women. Although in cases of the children, boys are affected by it more than girls. Fifty years old is the average age of people that can be affected. Children from age's two to ten can be affected as well but it happens rarely. There are a lot of things that can cause pustular psoriasis. This includes discontinuing the taking of systemic steroids. Taking of different drugs such as trazodone or lithium antidepressants, iodine, penicillin, salicylates, hydroxychloroquine, interferon alfa, calcipotriol, chemotherapeutic agents and recombinanant interferon-beta injections can also be the reasons of having a pustular psoriasis. Solutions that are strong and irritating can also cause pustular psoriasis like steroids under occlusion, anthralin, zinc pyrithione in shampoo and tar. For those who have experienced pustular psoriasis, it was not really identified of what triggered it. Some had them because of infections, sunlight, hypocalcemia, pregnancy and cholestatic iaundice.

To determine if a person has pustular psoriasis there are different symptoms. Initially the person's skin is tender and fiery red. One may also experience headache, chills, fever, decreased appetite, joint pain, nausea and feeling of uneasiness and discomfort. One may also see clusters of pustules that will appear on the skin. The common areas where pustules usually appear are in the part where your skin bends and folds and genital and anal area. They may also occur under your nails causing your nails to come off. It rarely appears on the face but pustules may also appear on the tongue which will make swallowing difficult. People with pustular psoriasis are admitted to the hospital. They make sure that the patient gets bed rest and adequate intake of fluid. It is also to prevent them from loosing too much heat and have too much heart strain. To help soothe the affected areas saltine solutions, baths with oatmeal and bland compresses are being applied to the skin. There are usually three basic types of treatments. This include the topical therapy where in drugs are used on the affected skin. Next is the phototherapy where in this time light is used to soothe it. Another is the systematic therapy where in drugs are taken into the body of the patient. These treatments can be used in combination or alone to cure the patient.
