Alcoholic Liver Disease

by Sam Malone

The dangers of alcohol are known all over the world despite the fact that the habit is still very prominent in a number of houses in each country. The chemicals within any alcoholic drinks plays a role in disorienting an individual for short periods of time and can significantly influence the heart rate, breathing and temperature centers of the body as well. Extreme cases of alcohol abuse can even go so far as to slow down breathing patterns to such an extent so as to be fatal. Some of the other effects of alcohol on the body include an irritation of the lining of the stomach, an increase in the blood flow of the skin, a reduction in the flow of blood to the muscles as well as increasing the toxic content of the body. One of the conditions most commonly associated with alcohol is known as alcoholic liver disease. The condition of alcoholic liver damage can be divided into three stages, each with their own alcoholic liver disease symptoms.

The first stage of the condition is Fatty Liver. Here the accumulation of fat is too much in the cells of the liver. This will result in an enlarged liver along with discomfort in the area of the upper abdomen towards the right side of the body. The second stage of the condition is known as Alcoholic Hepatitis. This is an inflammation or swelling of the liver that occurs along with the liver cells destruction as well as some amount of scarring to the organ. Some of the more common symptoms of this phase of the condition include the development of jaundice, fever, an increase in the count of white blood cells and a tender liver. Alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver is the third stage of the condition and is the destruction of the liver tissue leaving behind a non functioning liver tissue. The prominent symptoms that are likely to be noticed when suffering from this condition include kidney failure, mental confusion, excessive bleeding, an enlarged spleen and liver cancer. Once alcoholic kidney failure has set in and progressed to the stage of alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver, the only option for treatment is complete abstinence from alcohol as well as a liver transplant.

Treatment

It is very evident that the liver is an organ that is very susceptible to a number of condition that could also be fatal. It is therefore necessary that we pay special attention to the kind of foods that we consume when considering methods for treating an alcohol induced liver disease. A liver disease diet is required in order to coax the organ back to good health because of the fact that the liver is an essential part of the human body and helps significantly in cycles such as detoxification as well as digestion of foods. When affected by any kind of alcohol induced liver disease, the organs ability to metabolize proteins, fats, carbohydrates and vitamins is compromised, thereby leaving the body reeling from problems such as weakness and a number of deficiencies.

Any alcohol liver disease treatment needs to ensure the strict abstinence from any alcohol based beverages along with the ample consumption of fruits, vegetables and animal proteins along with a rich amount of antioxidants. Vitamins are extremely essential and can be achieved through the consumption of a varied layout of vegetables and fruits that should be a regular part of your diet anyway. There are also a number of medications that are available over the counter that will help you fight the condition and restore your liver to a better state of health. However, none of these medications are likely to be effective in any way unless your diet and alcohol consumption is controlled.
