Teenage Health Problems and Home Remedies

by Garreth Myers

Teenagers are often labelled difficult to get along with. The common list of litanies is rebellion, never willing to listen or conform. This age group tends to have a lot of difficult adjusting with other ages but we never really stop and think why they have so much trouble adjusting.

Teenage years tend to be really difficult. Not only are teenagers’ bodies undergoing a lot of change, they are also not able to explain or rationalise this change, making it difficult to get along while dealing with this change.

The body of teenager goes through a lot of change. Physically, it starts to mature sexually. Boys develop facial hair and notice their voice changing. Girls start menstruating and develop breasts. Boys and girls get sexually curious due to all the hormones that are in overdrive in their systems. Hormonal imbalances are also quite common at this time. Some of the health problems in teenagers due to hormones include acne, obesity, mood swings and complications related to sexually active behaviour.

Psychologically, teenage years can have a large impact on the psyche of teenagers. The hormones raging and peer pressure can lead to eating disorders, depression, body image issues and other psychological issues. These issues can manifest in different ways by the teenager becoming reckless or eating frequently. Comparatively, small issues like acne or an unfavourable change in appearance can have a completely disproportionate impact. Teenagers also find it difficult to deal with peer pressure.

Constant hanging out in groups can also lead to its own set of infections in teenagers -- something simple like flu or cold to more complicated infections like MRSA or methicillin-resistant Staphyloccous aureus.  Even sexually transmitted diseases tend to profligate in teenage groups especially if the group is not aware of complications of a sexually active life.

Acne is a big problem teenager’s face. All those hormonal changes, coupled with bad eating, usually show up as pimples. Acne is primarily caused by dirt and oil blocking the pores in the skin. The surging hormones in a teenager are the main cause for acne and pimples. Along with the hormones, bad eating habits, not maintaining a good hygiene and constantly irritating the skin can aggravate the problem further. It helps to educate your teen about basic hygiene, eating well and not trying to burst the pimples. Peer pressure often doesn’t allow teenagers to let the pimples heal naturally.

Teenage bodies need a higher nutritional intake especially because their bodies are growing rapidly. Calcium, iron, magnesium, folate – all are very important and can act as a setting stone for the future. Teenage years are also the beginning of bad eating habits because that is also the first time the child goes out and makes conscious decisions about what to pick to eat. Often the quickest or the cheapest is the first choice.

  • It might not always be possible but encourage your teenager to eat fruits as often as possible. Keep fruits around the house to encourage health eating in teenagers. Easy to pick and eat fruits like bananas, apples, oranges,  pears, peaches and plums- the less peeling and fussing, the better
  • Teenagers are growing rapidly so snacking is also very important for them. Some of their meals might be out of the house and out of your control. Keep healthy snacks like crackers, fruit, whole wheat options in muffins and cakes, fortified juice and milk, and energy bars among other options.

Eating some things rights now can help prevent some major illnesses later in their adult lives including hypertension, diabetes and obesity.
