How to get rid of shaving bumps?

Shaving razor bumps are very common problem in many men as well as women. In some people, the bumps resemble small pimples, but at times, they could look like scars or a rash. For some of us, these shaving razor bumps may be no more than a minor and unsightly problem. However, there are many individuals who experience severe itching, swelling and irritation, as a result of these bumps. Most instances of shaving razor bumps are not serious and disappear within a couple of hours, without any treatment. In some instances though, these bumps could last much longer, like perhaps even days. Fortunately, there are many ways in which you can alleviate the razor bumps as well as the symptoms caused by them. Given below are some of the fastest ways to get rid of razor bumps:

  • Ice: This alleviates most skin conditions and is the fastest way to get rid of razor bumps, as it soothes the inflammation, allowing the skin to return to its normal state. You could use an ice pack or a cold compress on the affected area.
  • Aloe Vera: The inner gel derived from the leaf of an Aloe Vera plant has soothing properties and helps alleviate the symptoms of razor bumps. For best results, break open the stem or leaf of the plant and rub the inner part directly on to the bumps.
  • Aspirin: Instead of ingesting aspirin, it can be applied in the form of paste directly on to the inflamed area. Crush two aspirin tablets and mix the powder in some water, to make a thick paste. Apply the paste on to the skin and leave it on for five or ten minutes, before washing it off with warm water.

How to prevent them ?

Razor bumps are a common problem in many men and in some cases, women too. They usually crop up around the face, soon after shaving, mainly due to factors like applying excess pressure while shaving, using the wrong shaving technique or trying to shave with a razor that is blunt or dirty. At times, men could get razor bumps on their face if they do not lubricate their skin properly, before shaving. There are several shaving tips for men that can help them prevent razor bumps on the face.

Skin experts usually recommend the use of warm water, while shaving, as it opens the pores on the skin and softens the facial hair that is about to be removed. The face should be washed properly, preferable with warm water and a cleanser before shaving. In order to prevent razor bumps, it is also important to use a blade that is fresh and clean.

It is also important to shave in the direction of the hair growth and not against it. Shaving up or against the grain causes the hair to grow back faster and can lead to razor bumps. Repeated shaving strokes on the same patch of skin can lead to irritation and razor bumps and therefore it should be avoided.

In order to prevent razor bumps, it is important to use an aftershave lotion or something similar, to close the pores, so that dirt cannot get inside. Witch hazel, because of its antiseptic properties can also be used after shaving. Some of the other effective over the counter products that can prevent the formation of razor bumps include crushed aspirin powder diluted in water or glycerin (3 drops) mixed in water (quarter cup). These solutions can be used as a skin toner.

How do you get a razor burn?

Razor bumps are a common problem seen in most men and in some cases women too. Not only are they unsightly, but in many cases, they become inflamed, which in turn causes a lot of pain and discomfort. Fortunately, it is possible to prevent razor bumps, by following the right hygienic measures and shaving techniques. By avoiding the causes of razor bumps, it is possible to reduce the risks of them cropping up. Some of the most common causes of razor bumps include:

  • Incorrect Razors: By using blades that are either blunt or have not been cleaned properly, the risks of razor bumps increase significantly.
  • Close Shaving: This happens when a person puts an excess amount of pressure on to the skin, while shaving
  • Dry Shaving: The lack of adequate moisture or hydration on the skin that needs to be shaved is quite likely to cause razor bumps
  • Wrong Direction: One of the main causes of razor bumps is shaving against the growth of hair. The best technique is to shave in the direction of the hair growth.
  • Post-Shaving Routine: Some men and women leave the pores of the skin open after shaving, which could cause dirt to enter and get trapped within. This not only leads to razor bumps, but could also cause an nflammation. Therefore, it is important to apply an astringent, some glycerin or a good aftershave lotion to close the skin pores. However, applying an aftershave or cologne that contains strong or harsh products can irritate the skin and can aggravate a razor burn.

Fortunately, it is possible to undergo razor bumps treatment at home, to alleviate the pain and discomfort.

Do not re-use the same razor as it can cause razor bumps and infection. You might want to use a disposable razor and soap the area before you use the razor. After shaving, moisten the area with aloe vera or any cream to prevent dryness. Instead of shaving, there are many natural ways for hair removal.
