When the thyroid gland in the body produces an insufficient amount of the thyroid hormone, the resulting condition is known as hypothyroidism. This may occur on account of a pituitary deficiency or a defect in the thyroid gland. Inadequate production of the thyroid hormone leads to several bodily disorders. The thyroid hormones play a key role in metabolism and once the thyroid gland starts to malfunction, it causes many changes in eating habits and body weight. Hypothyroidism slows down the body’s metabolism rate and results in weight gain.

You can try a few home remedies to help stimulate the functioning of the thyroid gland.

  • Spirulina is very effective in stimulating the thyroid gland and increasing production of the thyroid hormone.
  • Kelp Sea Weed is an excellent antioxidant that helps assist the thyroid gland. L-Tyrosine is an amino acid that helps increase plasma levels and is an essential component of the thyroid hormone.
  • Regular intake of Vitamin B helps improve cellular oxygenation and energy. It also aids in digestion, strengthens immunity and the thyroid function.
  • Primrose oil is another effective remedy for curing the imbalance of thyroid hormones in the body.
  • Bladder wrack is an effective thyroid stimulant. The original source of iodine, bladder wrack is known to increase metabolism and curtail obesity.
  • Agnus Castus helps support the pituitary gland and balances estrogen. An imbalance of estrogen levels interferes with the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. Black Cohosh is also believed to be effective in balancing estrogen levels.

Add essential elements like calcium, iron, terbium, thulium, copper and manganese to your daily diet as they are necessary for strengthening health, smoothening metabolism and stimulating the thyroid gland. Eat foods that are rich in vitamin A like yellow vegetables, eggs, carrots and green and leafy vegetables that are thyroid stimulants. A strict dietary regiment should help you lose weight gained on account of hypothyroidism. So, for instance, make sure to avoid foods that are oily, spicy or fatty. Also avoid food rich in carbohydrates like rice and potatoes. Stay away from high calorie chocolates, red meat, refined flour and excess salt. Another effective remedy for obesity is drinking the juice made from the leaves of jujube or Indian plum. The leaves should be soaked in water overnight and this water should be taken on an empty stomach every morning, for a month.

exercises are essential for burning unwanted calories. Try to do simple exercises at home, sit ups, push ups or even a morning walk. Green salads that contain tomato and mint leaves are effective in burning fat. Green tea or ginger tea is also effective in burning excess fat.

A body weight of 61 kgs at 22 years of age is not necessarily considered obese or even overweight. Since you havent mentioned your height, which is an important factor in determining your ideal weight, it is not possible to say for sure, but it is likely that you are merely a few kilos overweight. Weight gain is however one of the symptoms of hypothyroidism, in which the thyroid gland does not produce sufficient amounts of the thyroid hormone. Assuming that this is the cause of your weight gain, treating the condition will help bring your weight under control. There are no home remedies to treat hypothyroidism; the only treatment is thyroid supplements to make up for the deficiency in your bodys production of the hormone.

However, exercising and following a healthy, balanced diet are always beneficial. If you do not already exercise, you should start doing so regularly. Working out for at least half an hour a day will help you lose weight and generally feel more alert and fit. With regard to your diet, simply try to eat sensibly — you dont seem to need a drastic or strict diet. Cut down on fats without cutting them out of your diet entirely, and eat more fiber.
