Causes of Scleroderma

The causes of scleroderma are not specific. Scleroderma can occur if there is an excess of collagen accumulation in the body. But science has not been able to identify why the body produces these stores of collagen. This increase in collagen has been known to turn the body’s immune system against the body.

There are some risk factors of scleroderma that make it easier to identify if you are likely to get it.

  • Women seem more susceptible to scleroderma than men. It generally affects people between the ages of 30 to 50.
  • Certain races are more prone to scleroderma. Native Americans and African Americans seem to get this autoimmune deficiency far more often than Caucasians or Asians.
  • Exposure to substances like silica dust, polyvinyl chloride, paint thinners and some chemotherapy drugs increase your chances of getting scleroderma.
