If applied at the first sign of a cold sore, and used till tingling is gone. Mentholatum rub works great. Usually in a few hours the whole thing is gone. However if it is already formed or is a serious infection, it takes longer, but also relieves the pain that goes with a cold sore. Must be used constantly during the first signs of an outbreak.

at the first signs of tingling and numbness dab some tea tree oil over the area that is effected; reapply 3-4 times to clean skin per day. If you have very sensitive skin you could cut the tea tree oil with cocoa butter oil or whatever works for you.

My grandma, a blackfoot indian, had many home remedies for various common and more serious illnesses. Here is one for cold sores. Upon the fist sign of tingling, simply use earwax on the infected area. Continue the next day (if there is a next day).

as soon as you feel a tingle, put some hydrogen peroxide on it. This stops it from coming. If you're too late you can cut the healing time down to a week by applying hydrogen peroxide as often as you can, AND this dries it up and keeps it from spreading.

At the first sign of outbreak, apply Preparation H to the area. The sore usually disappears in 24 hours. Also L-Lysine taken daily during the cold and flu season will reduce outbreaks.
