Throat

Like any other part of the body, the throat functions help with chewing breathing, talking and swallowing.



It assists us when we have to drink, breathe air into our lungs and relish on our favorite foods. A few of us may not know, but there are complications that a throat may and can encounter, and experiencing sore throat is a common problem that most of us encounter time and time again in our lives.

Sore Throat

We have all experienced sore throat.



This is caused by a very common virus – the same virus that causes colds and respiratory illnesses. There is also a bacterium that causes other complications like strep throat.



Experiencing sore throat can also be the cause from smoking cigarettes, nasal drip and allergic reactions to those chemicals, bone injuries and even early stages of throat cancer. There is however certain medical treatments that can also cause a sore throat - the tonsillectomy (the airway control during operation), or also chemotherapy.

Trying to treat the pain is usually a very common procedure when one suffers from a sore throat.



Lozenge intake, gargling saltwater, and swallowing an aspirin with water, or ibuprofen are other common treatments that help make the sore throat subside and eventually disappear. Another way of treating it is by consuming a reasonable amount of fluids, especially soup, to assist at easing the complication.



Ample rest is also advisable.

Strep Throat

Strep throat is an infection caused by a bacterium, and is most-commonly acquired by young children. The bacteria home in the throat and nose and when coughing, sneezing and shaking hands, the strep throat infection spreads from one individual to another.



Strep throat symptoms include swollen and red tonsils, severe stomachache and also fever. The infection can be turned away by the means of proper hygiene, like washing the hands frequently. This helps to prevent the spread of the infection and the bacteria.

Throat Cancer

An irregular activity by the body’s cells (in this case, the throat cells) causes cancer. The infected cells divide in no particular order and with no sequence. If it is not treated and the process continues, the cells form a massive tissue and turns into a growth, which is also known as tumor. This may also be referred to as malignant tumors, which is a cancer that spreads throughout the body.

Throat cancer symptoms may include a sore throat, chewing difficulty, moving of jaw and tongue, hoarseness, that feeling of something stuck in your throat, a lump in your neck, weight loss, neck and throat pain, headaches, voice alteration.

Once cancer is recognized, treatments include the following will be taken:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Surgery
  • Combined Modality Therapy
  • Radiation Therapy
  • External/Internal Radiation Therapy
