Cold Sore Throat Natural Cures
by Kevin Pederson
Rate This Article
A cold, sore throat, and cough often go together, and although they are usually mild conditions, the experience can be quite traumatic and debilitating. A cold by itself is among the worst of the minor, relatively harmless illnesses, and when combined with a cough and a sore throat too, it is quite terrible for the sufferer. There is no cure for a cold, but there are several natural cold and
sore throat remedies
that can provide relief for the duration of the illness
Cold and sore throat remedies
Besides rest, one of the most important things to do when you have a cold is to drink plenty of water.
Keeping the body hydrated greatly lessens the severity of the infection. In addition, while most traditional "cold cures" are not really cures, they do provide some relief. You can try some of the following treatments (many of them work against all three problems simultaneously - the cold, the sore throat, and the cough):
Drink hot soup - chicken soup or chicken broth is particularly good, but vegetable broth is also among the best natural sore throat remedies and cold treatments.
Soup not only provides the much needed fluids, but provides many nutrients, and the warmth soothes the throat as well. Make sure that the soup also contains onions, garlic, ginger, and pepper, all of which are excellent herbal sore throat remedies.
Take some vitamin C supplements; drinking fresh juices is also good, but if you already have a cough and sore throat, most juices that contain vitamin C will probably irritate your throat further.
Steam inhalation also fights all three problems - it clears the nasal passages, soothes the sore throat, and helps get rid of phlegm and mucus. If it is available and if you are not averse to the smell, you can also add a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil to the water just before you begin inhalation.
You can also use home made saline nose drops to treat your cold and blocked nose. Simply mix a bit of salt in water, and using a dropper put some of this solution in your nose.
Alcohol is also a great natural sore throat remedy, as long as it is not used in excess. It also treats a cold to some extent. A mixture of lemon juice, hot water, and whisky is one traditional recipe that you can use. Brandy is also very effective - you can drink it neat or mix it with a little honey and a few cloves, heat this mixture, and then drink it while still warm.
