Sore Lump Armpit

A lump in the armpit can be caused by any number of factors, and it is advisable that you get the lump examined by a doctor. In many cases, the lump may be a superficial problem, such as a skin infection. Boils and cysts are not uncommon in the underarm area, especially among people who shave the underarms. However, the lump may also be an internal problem, of which the most common and likely is a swelling of the lymph nodes in the armpit. It is difficult to say what the lump is without actually examining it, and treatment is of course impossible without a certain diagnosis.

Swollen Lymph Nodes Under Arm

If you have merely developed a boil or a cyst in your underarm area, you mainly need to be strict about your personal hygiene. Keeping the area clean is of the utmost importance – preferably bathe twice a day, and wash your underarms a couple of times more. Ensure that you wear clean clothes made of natural fibers at all times, so that you don’t sweat too much and bacterial presence is minimized. Avoid touching the lump unnecessarily, and certainly do not try to pop or burst it. A cyst will usually disappear on its own and requires no treatment. The only real treatment you may need for a boil is a warm compress, applied several times a day. This eases the pain quite effectively, and is also supposed to help fight the infection and drain the boil. If and when the boil bursts, you must immediately and thoroughly clean the area. This will usually happen within a week or two. If the lump persists for any longer or is too painful, you should visit a doctor as it may be an abscess rather than a boil. Cysts too sometimes need to be removed surgically, if they do not disappear on their own.

Another common reason for a lump in the underarm area is inflammation of the lymph nodes. However, this by itself is usually only a symptom of some other problem, which could be an infection, an autoimmune disorder, or the development of a malignant tumor. There are a number of infections that cause enlarged lymph nodes, and a diagnosis can be made only after identifying the other symptoms. Breast cancer and certain types of lymphoma and leukemia can also cause the lymph nodes in the armpit to swell up. As you can see, these conditions require a proper medical diagnosis and prompt treatment.

A sore lump in the armpit could be due to the swollen lymph nodes that are under the arm. These lumps may be present for many different causes. The continued use of antiperspirants may cause surface infections that appear in the form of lumps. Shaving the hair in the underarm area may cause ingrown hair, which appear as lumps in their initial stages. A sore armpit is usually due to abscesses that form under the person’s skin. These abscesses not only make you feel sore in the underarm area but also cause a lot of pain.

Swollen armpit is almost always an indication of an infection that has caused the lymph nodes to swell up. In a physical examination, the doctors usually check the lymph nodes on the neck as well as the armpits. Swollen lymph nodes in the underarm area could be due to viral or bacterial infections that overwork the lymph nodes. Since the lymph nodes function as a filter that filters out infectious organisms from the blood, they are susceptible to a lot of infection. The sore lump in the armpit could also be an indication of a benign tumor or cancer.

A sore underarm in women should be taken care of and also reported to a doctor immediately, since this could be an early stage indicating breast cancer. Some of the other causes of a sore lump under the armpit are bacterial infections, infections in the breast or arm, ascending lymphangitis, leukemia, sporotrichosis, lymphadenitis, cat scratch disease, Hodgkin’s or non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, benign cysts, swollen breast tissue, lipomas, allergic reactions, chickenpox, shingles, AIDS, and mononucleosis. A lump in the armpit of a male could be due to any of the above causes except for breast cancer. A painful lump under the arm should not be ignored and should be examined by a doctor as soon as possible. If the underarm soreness persists and there are visible signs of infection, you may have to undergo appropriate treatment for it.

Sore armpit lymph nodes under arm treatment could be conducted with the help of home care as well. However, home care to be given would depend mainly on what actually causes the lump to be formed in the first place. In order to pin point the cause, you will have to check with your health care provider first, especially if you notice sore underarms during pregnancy or you develop a sore lump under your armpit during pregnancy. This is because swollen armpits during pregnancy would require treatment that would be safe for both the mother and baby. It is not possible to diagnose these sore armpit bumps without the help of a doctor. The doctor will most likely perform a thorough physical examination and check your armpits for swollen lymph nodes. To diagnose the painful lump under the armpit, the doctor will take a detailed medical history as well. Since the painful lump under the armpit could be cancer, it is best if you cooperate with the doctor completely. The doctor may also take a biopsy from the sore underarm area to complete the diagnosis.
Additional tests performed to diagnose a painful lump under a female’s or male’s armpit are blood tests, including complete blood count, kidney function test, liver function test, platelet count, liver-spleen scan, chest X-ray and mammogram. If the sore underarm lump is due to a viral infection, no treatment may be required as the lump may disappear on its own. However, if it is not an infection that is viral, the sore lump in armpit treatment may depend on the cause of the soreness.

Sore underarm lymph nodes or the sore underarm glands may be harmless or may be the indication of a severe condition as well. When checking for any kind of cancerous lump one should note that it would depend mainly on the type of cancer you are suffering from. Since most cancers are easy to treat when they are detected early, it is best to go to a doctor as soon as you experience the lump for the first time. Sore underarm muscles are completely different than sore armpit glands, and therefore, the entire process of diagnosis and treatment will be different.
