A burning sensation in the chest and throat is seen to occur in pregnant women. Eliminating heartburn in pregnancy is difficult. But, there are ways to minimise the same. Hormonal disturbances in pregnancy result in softening of the ligaments. This in turn results in the closure of lower oesophageal sphincter. Foods that increase heartburn in pregnancy, such as fried foods, seasoned foods, tomatoes, citrus fruits, vinegar, mustard and mint products are better avoided. Abstain from large meals. Eat 4 to 6 small meals. Restrain from eating full, especially before retiring to bed. Place your head in an elevated level, while sleeping, to prevent regurgitation of stomach contents. Chew and masticate well, while eating. Alcohol and caffeinated beverages are not recommended, as acid reflux is seen to occur. Adequate intake of water is essential. Avoid wearing tight fitting clothes. Smoking is not advisable, as nicotine increases heartburn. Antacids are also helpful. Excessive use of antacids is not recommended. Do not slouch while sitting.
