Do you have a diet for people to follow who has diverticulosis?

For any diverticulitis natural treatment plan, diet is something that cannot be ignored. Usually, a diet plan forms part of the treatment for mild and acute cases of the disease. Since the condition affects the digestive system directly, it is all the more important to take special care of your diet. That said; diverticulosis cannot be treated with a special diet; however diet only complements a course of antibiotics. In fact, a diverticulosis diet does not even help you prevent the condition. However, it does help prevent complication of symptoms and escalation of digestive discomfort caused by the condition.

Most of the doctors recommend clear soups and soft broths, along with foods that are very low in fiber. Here's an outline of foods that you should eat.

  • The first step in a diverticulosis diet is to have a completely liquid diet. However, as you begin to feel slightly better, your doctor will ask you to add low fiber solids to your diet as well.
  • Some of the best foods for diverticulosis include clear broths, warm soups, clear soda, ice pops and ice chips, fruit pulp and fruit juice, plain water, gelatin, warm coffee or tea without any cream and other soft foods such as rice puddings and pasta.
  • You may eat mashed fruits without seeds or skin. You may also choose to consume boiled and mashed beans, rice, mashed potatoes, boiled peas, yams, eggs, poultry and fish. Other low fiber solid foods include low fiber cereals, low fat yogurt, noodles and parboiled rice. Refined wheat breads can also be consumed when you are suffering from diverticulosis.
Consuming only clear liquids, juices and broths may cause weakness or even nutritional deficiencies. Therefore, it is best to add low fiber foods to your diet after a few days of the initial clear liquids diet. This will prevent unusual weight loss and keep you healthier.
