Is there any specific diet that TB patients needs to follow?

Skeletal TB (Extra-pulmonary TB) is a relatively common form of tuberculosis, characterized by bone pain, curving of the affected joint, loss of movement and increased vulnerability to fractures. Pott's disease, a condition that affects the spine, is probably the most common type of Bone TB. While this medical problem can be treated, it is a lengthy process; your doctor may prescribe antibiotics that need to be taken for a period of 12 months. It is imperative that you follow the prescribed course of medication to the tee. In some cases, surgery may also be required.

Since malnutrition (a shortage of calories, vitamins or minerals in the body) is quite a common phenomenon in patients suffering from tuberculosis, you need to be very careful about the foods you eat and avoid. There is no specific diet that you need to follow for Bone TB. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind, while planning out your diet.

Increase your Protein Intake

Your body will need higher than normal amounts of protein to support and rebuild the bones that have been damaged by the disease. Therefore, make sure that you consume the amount of protein recommended by your doctor on a daily basis. Red meats can increase the levels of uric acid in your body and should be avoided. Some of the healthy sources of protein include skinless chicken, turkey, fish, egg whites, soybean, pulses and low-fat dairy products.

Get your Vitamins

Vitamin D is one of the most important nutrients for good bone health, as it facilitates the proper absorption of Calcium. Sunlight is an excellent source of this vitamin but you can boost the levels of this nutrient in your body, by consuming the recommended amounts of milk, salmon, tuna, flounder, sole, lean pork, eggs, mushrooms, yogurt and ricotta cheese. Certain vitamin-rich foods like whole grains, fruits and vegetables have also been known to reduce the symptoms of TB.

Go Green

A study conducted by the University Of Maryland Medical Center stated that green tea, which contains a high amount of antioxidants, can complement the medical treatment of TB. Replace sweet and aerated beverages with a cup or two of warm, refreshing green tea.

Avoid

There several foods and beverages that you need to restrict, or perhaps even eliminate from your diet, while undergoing Bone TB treatment. These include:

  • Refined sugar
  • Processed items that are high in sodium
  • Caffeinated beverages
  • Spicy food

Before incorporating any changes to your daily diet, it is important that you consult a medical expert. For best results, follow the diet that has been suggested by your doctor.
