Piles and hemorrhoids generally happen because of the kind of food we eat and the lifestyle we follow. A diet rich in refined foods sans vegetables, fruits and whole grains can cause Constipation. Lack of exercise and bad lifestyle habits can aggravate the problem.

Piles is a condition that is triggered by constipation and the stress that is caused on the veins of the rectum while passing stool. This pressure is required because due to constipation, the stool becomes hard and it becomes difficult passing stool. The excess pressure causes inflammation in the blood vessels of the anus and the rectum. The vessels stretch and become out of shape. Piles can cause swelling, bleeding, burning, pain and itching in the rectum and anus.

There are a variety of diets, each prescribing certain do’s and don’ts. These generally comprise certain foods that one can have and other foods that one cannot eat. There are also various ways to count calories and methods to cut down those excess rolls of fat that the body keeps storing, every time we eat more than we really need.

Some of the diets that are popular with people are the Zone diet, the South Beach diet, the Scars dale diet, the Rice diet, the Hollywood Miracle diet, the Grapefruit diet, the Cabbage Soup diet, and the Atkins diet. Our body needs a certain amount of calories to function. And we get our calories from what we eat through the day. Since our bodies are efficient, they use only that much of calories that are needed. The extra calories get stored as fat for when it is needed. Since the body only uses a certain amount of calories, which it gets from the basic meals that we eat, it is very easy to add on more calories. A couple of cream cookies with a large mug of latte, a packet of wafers, a large burger dripping with mayonnaise and cheese, a pizza coated with butter and cheese, or a large glass of aerated beverage and we have more calories than the body needs. So, all that delicious food gets transformed into rolls of new fat. Once that happens, we get into a tizzy and rush to grab the latest diet or eating fad to dissolve that fat and lose excess weight.

While diets may help people lose a few pounds within a month or two, they are not sustainable. Since most people eat more food than the body needs, diets create a short term deficit. After following the diet for a few months, the person goes back to his normal diet and eating habits. And then the weight comes back. Also, most diets cannot be carried on for months on end as they prescribe certain foods only, and the body needs all the nutrients to remain fit.

If you are on a diet and plan to follow it for a few months, then here are a few tips to help you stick to the diet.

  • Choose a diet that includes a variety of food products. Some diets insist on only a few food groups, which might create craving as well as nutrition deficiency. A variety of foods will be interesting and healthy.
  • To motivate yourself, think of how you looked when you started and how you would want to look eventually.
  • Give yourself small treats or gifts as you start meeting your goals.
  • And make sure that your weight loss gains are realistic.

Obesity is the health hazard that can risk a person to a number of diseases such as coronary atherosclerosis and hypertension. It can also complicate other diseases like asthma, diabetes and can also lead to heart attacks. The major objective for dieting is until the desirable weight is attained. Once it is obtained, maintenance diet has to be formulated which is the hardest part of weight loss program.

  • Set realistic goals.
  • Make a diet record and keep an account of what you are eating and how much you are eating.
  • Expect plateau stage during dieting due to the accumulation of water instead of fat. Exercise can be increased during this period.
  • Avoid junks and empty calorie drinks. Cutting down cold drinks tend to cut down the calories to some extent. Drink a lot of water. Drinks like soy milk and fresh fruit juices become healthier option.
  • Learn to be mobile. Avoid leisure walks, prefer fast walking until you sweat as at this point fat is getting used up in the body. Prefer walking rather than driving to nearby places, take up the stairs rather than the lift. Develop a habit of exercising for at least half an hour a day such as jogging, running, aerobics, cycling, swimming or any exercise that you prefer.
  • Start gradually. Drastic changes in our diet may be difficult to follow than small changes. Cut down portions of food gradually and introduce healthier foods slowly.
  • Avoid a separate menu for yourself. Adapt according to your family meals. White bread can be substituted for brown bread, skimmed milk instead of whole milk, fried snacks like potato wafers can be substituted for carrot sticks or a piece of fruit. Low fat spreads should be preferred than butter. Use egg white instead of whole egg.
  • Increase the number of meals in a day to 5-6 times and avoid consumption of large portions of meal three times a day. A healthy breakfast is very essential. Include healthy snacks like fiber biscuits, sandwiches or salads in between the meals. Avoid sweets after every meal. Instead go for a fruit.
  • Boil, broil, steam or bake foods instead of frying. Use non stick cook wares.
  • Whenever a snack is desired, prepare one with raw vegetables as it supplies bulk and provides fiber to the diet.
  • Do not eat absent minded. Concentrate on the food that you eat. People tend to overeat while watching television or reading or during conversation.
  • Learn to control your appetite before going out for parties. A glass of skimmed milk or fruit juices, a fruit like apple or banana or a dry toast can be consumed before leaving to prevent overeating.
  • Do not banish your favorite food altogether. Consuming a piece of pastry occasionally is not a sin. But you can balance this by consuming few sticks of cucumber for snacks.
  • Avoid fad diets or crash diets like no carbohydrate diet or banana diet or fasting diet as it can change the components of normal balanced diet and hence it is difficult to maintain.
