Loss of voice is medically known as Laryngitis and it refers to the inflammation of the voice box or the larynx. Such a loss of voice causes hoarseness of voice and coughing and is very commonly seen in people suffering with a common cold. Laryngitis can be of two types; acute and chronic laryngitis.
Viral infections like common cold are one of the main causes of Laryngitis in its acute form. The condition is hardly ever caused by bacterial infections. Being caused by viral infections, this condition most often cannot be treated with antibiotics. When the vocal chords get inflamed, they cause hoarseness of voice and coughing and even a complete voice loss. Therefore one of the best loss of voice remedies is to give your voice a complete rest and keep drinking room temperature fluids to avoid dryness in the throat. However, if you experience any breathing difficulty along with a sore throat and loss of voice, it is important to get it checked by a medical professional immediately.
Chronic laryngitis on the other hand lasts for a longer time, maybe weeks or months. This condition is generally caused by factors like acid reflux, extreme strain on the voice, chronic sinusitis, smoking, exposure to other chemical fumes, alcohol and yeast infections which are commonly seen in people who use asthma inhalers, patients undergoing chemotherapy or even those with a weak immune system. People who have a drinking and cigarette smoking habit generally tend to have a slightly hoarse voice but if this hoarseness continues for over three weeks, it should be checked by an ENT specialist. People with these habits are most at risk to throat cancers. In most cases such a loss of voice causes inflammation of the lymph nodes, fever, coughing, breathlessness, excess saliva production and even difficulty in swallowing. Some people have jobs which require them to use their voice more than others such as teachers, lecturers, public or motivational speakers and singers. To such people loss of voice causes tremendous professional constraints. Such voice loss and hoarseness can be caused by excessive strain on their vocal chords. Misusing your voice or speaking too loudly can also cause cysts and hemorrhages in the vocal chords. It is always important to determine the root cause of laryngitis or voice loss and get the proper treatment at the earliest.
The simplest and best treatment for this condition would be to rest your voice completely and talk only when necessary. It is also important to take note of the various symptoms of laryngitis that you are experiencing and keep your doctor informed of the same. It is also necessary to keep drinking fluids through the day to avoid dryness in the throat. Shouting too loudly or even talking in whispers can aggravate the symptoms of laryngitis in adults as also in children, and therefore one should talk in a normal tone. If the voice loss is a result bacterial infections, anti fungal medications or antibiotics can be prescribed to treat the cold symptoms. Hoarseness of voice and coughing which are results of acid reflux can also be treated through proper medications. It is also helpful to quit smoking and drinking to avoid this problem. Exposure to harmful chemical fumes and dust should also be avoided as far as possible to prevent this condition. Some home remedies which can be followed to cure loss of voice include;
- Steam inhalations can sooth the vocal chords and help you get your voice back.
- Ginger tea can be a great cure for hoarseness of voice and coughing.
- Sucking on honey flavored cough drips can also provide relief and help cure voice loss.
- Drinking adequate amounts of water through the day helps in keeping the larynx moist and can help you recover from a voice loss quickly.
- Licorice roots can be added to tea for faster relief of a hoarse voice.
- Light massages to the neck, head and back muscles can also help in soothing strained vocal chords.
