Laryngitis is a fairly common throat inflammation which has gone completely out of hand. It usually begins with a general cold or a throat infection, and slowly spreads to such an extent that the larynx, or the voice box, becomes so badly swollen that it is completely inflamed. This will lead to loss of voice for any time between a day to a week.

The fact is that if laryngitis is treated properly and taken care of well, it will go away sooner than it came. But the methods to treat it are so simple that people generally tend to ignore them altogether. But it is extremely important that you get yourself checked out by a doctor before you try to treat yourself.

For while it is perfectly possible to take care of mere laryngitis at home, if it is accompanied with an infection, you must not neglect the infection and seek proper treatment for it. Infections require the use of antibiotics to kill, other wise they can spread and get out of hand completely.

The best and all encompassing remedy for laryngitis is to not exercise your vocal cords at all. This means you must not try to speak at all. If you can successfully take this vow of silence till you are better, chances are that you will heal very well and quickly. You must also keep sipping warm water intermittently. As a matter of fact any warm or hot liquid to which no spice has been added will be good enough to treat the condition. Gargle twice a day with warm water to which a tablespoon of salt and a quarter teaspoon of turmeric powder has been added. This is terribly unpalatable in taste, but it works very well with vocal cords. Keep a cardamom in your mouth - its juices will help provide relief to your aching throat.
