What do you do for foot infections?

Fungal infections of the foot are mainly classified into 2 categories: one that affects the toe nails and the other, which affects the skin. The former is termed as onychomycosis while the latter is called Athlete's foot, and is easier to get rid off. These kinds of infections occur particularly when the feet are moist or damp for too long, creating an ideal environment for infection to thrive. These infections are caused when organisms invade the body (foot) and begin to multiply. They tend to feed on the protein present in the skin cells and nails as well as on the nutrients that are found in the skin. A skin infection is characterized by itching, redness of the area, scaling, blisters and dryness and irritation.

Here are a few simple home remedies that can help you with this condition:

Take eight cups of water and heat it. To this add you will need to add two cups of vinegar. Let the solution cool till it is a little warm and then soak your feet in it. This will help kill the infection and should be done twice a day till the infection disappears. Tea tree oil is an excellent remedy as well. Take a liter of warm water and add about 40 - 45 drops of the oil into it. Now soak your feet in this solution for 10 - 20 minutes. Towel dry your feet making sure that no moisture is left, and then apply a few drops of the oil on the infected area. Take 3-4 garlic cloves and crush them so as to make a paste. Apply this paste on the infected areas and leave it on for about an hour, after which you may wash it off. One could also use onions instead of garlic. They posses anti fungal qualities and hence help in killing the infection.

Mix a few drops of oregano oil (2-3) with a teaspoon of olive oil. Mix the two together and apply it on the infection. Oregano oil has several antifungal, antibacterial, antiseptic and antiparasitical properties. Keep the skin dry and free from moisture. You can sprinkle some baking powder on the affected area. This will absorb any moisture that is present. While you try out these remedies, always ensure to take preventive steps to reduce the risk of a continued infection. Always maintain adequate hygiene of your feet and keep them clean and dry at all times.
