Food and Nutrition for Children

As babies grow up they tend to become fussy about food. A mother is always concerned about giving the right kind of food and nutrition for her kids whether it is a newborn baby or a young adult. When they are newborns the growth spurts in the infants are such that it makes them hungry all the time and hence the need to keep feeding them. Breast milk or infant formula is all that they get for the first two to three months. Both breast milk and the infant formula are complete in themselves with the required amount of nutrients and does measure up to the nutritional needs for infants. Therefore there is no need to supplement your infant's diet with any other food supplements or even water because he will already be getting that. Your baby needs to be fed up to 5-6 ounces nearly 5 times a day as this is the time when the most amount of growing takes place with the growth spurts that you will soon become familiar with.

As your baby outgrows the new born infant stage one of the first foods that your baby will be able to kind of swallow will be cereal. This cereal can be mixed with the breast milk or formula and fed to your baby. Since it's the very first times that you are feeding the baby this new semi solid food make sure that you introduce the new food with one spoonful a day and later as he gets used to it you could increase the amount of food and the frequency. Infant diets should be planned with a lot of care. You might realize that your baby tends to spit food out and not want to eat it and if he does that constantly then he may even begin to lose weight. The problem may be that your baby doesn't like a particular taste of the food or has grown tired of it.

If you think that it is due to the fact that the taste may not be agreeable to him you might have to invent ways by which you can present the same food to him but in a different form that he will not be able to easily identify. And even if he has grown tired of certain kinds of food then too you may have to come up with different recipes that will help you to make sure that he does get the nutrition that he deserves and begins to like the new look and taste that you have given to the old food. You should consult your paediatric dietician and draw up an infant feeding chart and schedule that would be tailored according to the needs of your baby. The infant feeding chart will help you to list out what foods will be good for your baby as he grows day by day. It will also be able to give you an understanding of what foods can be given at particular months and in what quantity.

Some feeding charts also will be able to provide you with recipes that will help to introduce certain foods to your baby which he will be able to relish and get used to slowly. Infant feeding schedules are very effective if you want to plan out your baby's eating habits and schedules over each month. It will not only give you an idea as to when you should feed your baby certain foods but also help you to keep a track of foods that your baby can be allergic to. It will help you to maintain a journal and keep track of nutritional needs for infants and children.
