The condition in which a person experiences temporary loss of voice is known as laryngitis. In this condition the voice box also known as the larynx gets inflamed due to infection or over use. This affects the functioning of the vocal cords that are situated inside the larynx, thus causing a person to experience temporary voice loss or hoarseness of voice.
The vocal cords are actually two mucus membranes that create sound through their movement of opening and closing. The air passing through the larynx vibrates against the vocal cords in order to emit a sound wave. However, when a person experiences laryngitis, his or her inflamed vocal cords are unable to produce sound efficiently. Most people experience acute or short lived laryngitis; however, street singers, and people who have to strain their voice excessively on a regular basis experience chronic laryngitis. However, it is always better to get yourself medically examined, as chronic laryngitis could be indicative of some other serious underlying ailment. You may use the home remedies mentioned below in order to experience effective relief; however, if your condition does not improve within one or two days please visit your doctor immediately.
- Warm salt water gargles are very effective in treating laryngitis. Salt possesses iodine that is important for the smooth functioning of the thyroid glands. It also helps in getting rid of bacterial infections causing this condition. Warm water helps in soothing and keeping the throat warm and moist.
- Drink plenty of warm fluids when faced with this condition. Chicken or clear vegetable soups are very effective in soothing the irritation brought about by this condition. These soups provide the body with various vitamins and proteins that help in strengthening the immune system.
- Increase your intake of ginger and garlic in order to obtain effective relief. Both these spices possess effective anti bacterial properties that will help in soothing your irritated throat. You can mix these two condiments with a hot bowl of soup or simply consume them in their raw form.
- Honey is very effective in getting rid of this condition. Honey provides the larynx with a protective coating that helps keep the throat moist. You can mix one teaspoon of ginger-garlic paste with three tablespoons of honey for better results.
- A hot water shower or steam inhaled from a bowl of hot water will also help in providing you with effective relief from this irritating condition. You may add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the bowl of hot water for better results.
- Avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, and eating oily foods when faced with this condition. All these dry the throat and worsen a patient’s condition.
