I am a breastfeeding mom my son has thrush and my breast are itchy. Is it possible that he can give it to me and we pass it back and forth to one another.

Thrush is a yeast infection that can also affect young children and infants. Thrush occurs due to the Candida Albicans fungus. This fungus is also responsible for yeast infections in the vagina and for diaper rash. Your son will suffer from symptoms like white patches in his mouth – on the roof, the inner walls of the cheek, and tongue. The patches could also have spread to his lips and to his gums. An important thing to remember at this point is that you should not try and wipe the patches away because you might cause the delicate area to start bleeding. In a few days, this would turn into an ulcer and cause your little one even more pain. It is very likely that your son has given you the beginnings of nipple thrush and in time, you could start passing the infection back and forth to each other. You should try and tackle the infection for him as well and for yourself. I assume that you are already treating his thrush infection and you should take steps to cure your nipple thrush.

There are a number of simple home remedies that you can use to try to cure nipple thrush. The first thing that you should do is to ensure that after every time you feed your son, you wash your nipples well with warm and soapy water. This will keep them clean. Do not use a towel to dry yourself but wait for your nipples to dry by themselves. You should also ensure that you are always wearing a clean bra. If your bra gets wet with milk or damp in any way, you should change it immediately. In case you are wearing nursing pads, you should ensure that you change them after every feeding. Should your nipples become so sore that you cannot bear to have even your undergarments or your clothes touch you, you should immediately start wearing nipple shells to ensure that you feel no pain. As far as diet is concerned, include as much yogurt as you can in your diet because this will help you fight the candida albicans fungus. You should also avoid all types of fermented food and drink and hence it is advisable to avoid sugar, bread and alcohol during this time. You can also apply gentian violet to your nipples to treat nipple thrush. You should remember that this application should be used in the short term.
