Throat and ear infections are extremely common in children and it is not uncommon for them to occur simultaneously. This is because the ears, nose and throat are all interconnected. The Eustachian tube is a tiny tube that connects the ear and the throat.
Therefore any throat infection can spread through this tube and infect the ear as well. You will have to treat both his ear infection as well as his throat in order to get rid of the infection completely and get rid of the irritation.
Home remedies for ear and throat infections are very effective as they help to treat the irritation as well as get rid of the infection itself. Make a soothing tonic out of onion juice for your son and allow him to have it throughout the day. Chop an onion fine and add a teaspoon of honey to it. Mix the onions and the honey thoroughly and then allow this mixture to stand undisturbed for at least 20 minutes. After this, drain the liquid and allow your son to have it right away. The onion juice and honey both have antibacterial properties and also help to reduce the irritation that he is experiencing in his throat. As this tonic is sweet, children tend to like it and are not averse it as they often are to bitter medications.
Eucalyptus steam inhalation is often used to loosen hardened mucus, however as he is only 9 years old he may not sit still and he may knock over the hot water which could result in serious burns. Instead, to get rid of mucus you can use a mustard seed paste instead. Soak a handful of mustard seeds in a bowl of water for at least three to four hours. After this, drain the water and grind the seeds into a thick paste. Place a thin strip of clean cloth over his chest and then apply the paste to the cloth. Do not apply the paste directly to his skin as this mustard paste is a very strong rubefacient and can irritate the skin. Leave this paste on for at least 30 minutes as this will allow it to soak into his skin and will relieve him of any congestion.
In order to get rid of the irritation in his ear, you can mix one drop of garlic oil with five drops of olive oil and pour this into his ear. Make sure that he sleeps on his side for at least 20 minutes so that the oil trickles deep into his ear. Garlic oil has very strong antibacterial and antifungal properties and will help to get rid of any infection. Olive oil helps to dissolve any wax within the ear that may be adding to the irritation. You can place a small cotton ball in his ear for a little while after this as this will soak up any excess oil within his ear.
