Cures for treating severe pain in the neck

How can you relieve severe pain in your neck that radiates to your shoulder blades?
(25 Mar 2007)

The spine is made of several long and short bones that are connected together with the help of discs. The entire spine is made in such a manner so that your body is able to stand erect, bend and perform many other kinds of movements. However, the structure of the spine also makes it susceptible to a lot of injuries, wear and tear.

The best way to treat your neck pain is to improve the blood flow to the neck. This can be done by apply an ice pack or getting a cold massage through a pack of frozen peas. You can apply the ice pack to the neck several times a day. If there is any inflammation in the muscles around the neck area, the ice pack can help decrease it.

Home remedies for neck pain also include an alteration between heat and cold applied directly to the neck. Heat improves the blood flow to the neck, and an ice pack helps decrease inflammation. Alternating between the two can help you deal with the blood flow. Neck and shoulder pain relief usually goes hand in hand. Both shoulder and neck pain usually occur together and are related to misalignment of the spine.

What causes neck and shoulder pain?

One of the most common causes of neck and shoulder pain is bad posture. Your spine is made of small columns of bones and discs. While this makes the spine extremely flexible, it also makes you extremely prone to injuries. Some of the other causes of pain in neck and shoulders are muscle injuries and injuries to the ligament.

Degenerative arthritis can affect all joints of the body, and the neck joint is also susceptible to gradual wear and inflammation. This causes the tendons and the muscles around the neck to become inflamed and painful. If the arthritis affects the cervical spine, it could pinch the nerves on the neck and shoulders, causing increased pain in both the areas.

The neck and shoulder pain cure is usually dependent on the causes of the condition. A broken collarbone would require you to wear a brace and avoid jerky movements. Other causes include bursitis, heart attacks, break or crack in the shoulder blades, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder separation or dislocation of the shoulder joint, and whiplash injuries.

Tendonitis and gall bladder disease are some of the other causes of pain in the shoulder and the neck. The pain in the neck and shoulder could have also been caused due to referred pain from your organs under the diaphragm.

What are the symptoms associated with neck and shoulder pain?

Neck and shoulder pain are almost always connected to one another. Neck and shoulder pain symptoms are usually very distinct. Here are some of the symptoms that you may experience:
  • Spasm of muscles: The powerful involuntary contracting of muscles may make you feel stiff and cause a lot of pain as well. You may not be able to move your neck till the spasms continue.
  • Ache: A dull pain that lingers in the area where your neck meets your torso can cause a lot of discomfort. The neck and the shoulder area are tender to touch, and the ache could be either at one side of the neck or both. It could also be at the middle of the neck.
  • Stiffness: Apart from the pain and the aching, there is also stiffness in the neck. The movements of your neck are painful and the range of motion is severely curtailed. If you hold your neck in one position, it may hurt you a lot.
  • Headaches: While this is not very common, some people do experience headaches due to the pain in their shoulder and neck. The headaches may be accompanied with dizziness and a loss of balance. Some people may even experience vertigo.
Once the symptoms have been identified and the causes have been ascertained, treatment for neck and shoulder pain becomes much easier.

Are there any exercises that can help relieve neck and shoulder pain?

Whiplash injuries and bad posture can cause a lot of pain in the neck and the shoulders. Exercises for neck and shoulder pain are a great way to keep your spine aligned and your neck and shoulders free of pain. However, if you are already in pain, you will need to slow down the exercises and do them just right. The best way to go about it is to consult with a doctor or a physiotherapist.

  • Chin nod: This is an exercise in which you nod your head slowly. Lie down on a bed and nod slowly as if saying yes. Do not let the muscles in the front harden. If you feel the muscles hardening, just stop. Hold your position for about five seconds and then change position. Repeat for at least 10 times.
  • Head rotation: Rotate your head slowly from one side to another. Do these while laying your head on a soft pillow. Move the head completely from one side to the other, and repeat the motion about 10 times.
  • Posture positions: There are a lot of exercises in yoga that can help you align your back perfectly. There are a lot of poses that help you stretch your spine as well as your limbs, strengthening the entire spine, neck and limbs. These neck and shoulder stretches can prevent you from getting injured as well.

Neck pain is a result of injury, stress, disease or muscle tension. Try these simple home remedies:

  1. A hot shower for 20 mins provides relief.
  2. Use a soft pillow for your neck to rest.
  3. An ice pack for 15-20 mins also numbs pain, reduces swelling and stiffness by constricting the blood vessels.
  4. Relaxation techniques, such as abdominal breathing exercises prove beneficial.
  5. Do some stretching exercises of the neck (bending forward, backward and sideward).
  6. Massage with oil is very helpful.
