Water retention is a common factor behind a number of conditions and it is typically women who have to deal with it. Usually this is linked to hormonal fluctuations since water retention is related to a woman’s menstrual cycle. In fact, most women can vouch for the fact that premenstrual syndrome (PMS) has water retention as part of the symptoms.
Usually estrogen levels tend to be elevated in case of some women, which leads to aldosterone, another hormone. It is this hormone that leads one’s kidneys to retain fluids. As a result, around this time of the month, water causes weight gain in women. However, at the same time, water retention might require medical attention since such water body problems could be linked to a variety of kidney problems. For instance, if the body does not get adequate amounts of drinking water, it might start to retain the water it does get. Kidney disease could also have this particular problem as part of the symptoms. Another major factor could be excessive salt which makes your body retain water. Symptoms of this show up on any part of the body, but usually the retention shows up around one’s legs and ankles. Thus, swelling is common and is termed as edema.
Water retention is typically treated with the help of diuretics. These substances can help one deal with the retention problem and you might find natural options. These include lemon and dandelion. Even with PMS, dandelion can help by its diuretic function and the manner in which it eliminates toxins. Another factor to keep in mind with regards to one’s diet would be that salty food can cause this problem. Thus, cut back on salty food or packaged food that tends to have high salt content. At home, the swelling and water problem could find relief in elevation of the legs. This helps not only in swelling but also when one has other foot problems like sprains. While doctors may prescribe diuretic medication, bear in mind that there are a number of herbs in addition to food sources which offer the same diuretic effect. Another thing one should understand is that water retention should be examined by a doctor. While home remedies might help with the occasional water retention problem, more serious issues require evaluation. This is because other problems could be related to water retention. Some of these include thyroid problems or liver disease.
