(15 Apr 2008)

Many people are keen on knowing what causes blood in urine and stool because nowadays blood in urine in both males and females is a relatively common problem. Protein and blood in urine is medically known as hematuria. In some cases blood in the urine in females may also be found because of a urinary tract infection or UTI.

The urinary tract is mostly made up of the kidney that plays an important role in filtering out the waste and water in the blood and then produces urine from this waste. The other parts of the urinary tract are the urethra and the ureters. Many a times blood in the urine is not visible always because the amount of blood may be too small, however if the amount of blood in the urine is sufficient then the urine may appear to be reddish or pinkish in color.

The causes for blood in the urine of children may also be on account of the presence of stones in the ureters or in the kidneys. This is in fact known to be a common problem in individuals who are younger than 40 years of age. Another one of the causes of blood in the urine are urinary tract infections, injury, inflammation or infection of the urinary system or even a blockage of the urinary tract can result in hematuria or blood in the urine. Blood in the urine in older males is also observed on account of an enlarged prostrate. In some cases people who are suffering from diseases such as hypertension, diabetes or even high blood pressure may observe the presence of blood in urine. Many times blood in the urine in females may also be experienced along with some pain. This is mostly observed in females at the time of menstruation. A medical condition known as Glomerulonephritis may also lead to blood in urine in females with pain.

People suffering from this medical condition may not show any signs or just show minimal signs of renal failure. One should also keep in mind that the consumption of large amounts of berries, rhubarb or beets is known to result in blood in the urine as does the consumption of foods with certain food coloring. Those who are suffering from blood in the urine should not be seriously concerned especially if they have not been diagnosed with any serious medical conditions such s kidney disease or cancer. Protein and blood in the urine if observed should be immediately reported to the doctor so that the same may be investigated in detail. One should also keep in mind that blood in urine along with flank pain as well as fever is a sign of kidney infection and should be immediately reported to the doctor.

In case the blood in the urine is on account of kidney stones one should ensure that they drink plenty of water and even barley water so as to help pass the stones out. This is an effective natural treatment as most kidney stones are known to pass out of the urinary system naturally. Some men are also known to observe blood in urine after intercourse which should also be reported to the doctor for proper investigation. It has been observed that at a given time there may be several reasons of blood in urine or hematuria existing in an individual. If blood in urine is a result of the consumption of certain medications such as antibiotics, anticoagulants and analgesics one should discontinue these medications and speak with their doctor for suitable alternatives that may be taken in order to curb as also treat the existing condition.

Blood in urine causes and cures

Blood in the urine – a condition known as Haematuria – occurs due to inflammation of a part or parts of the urinary tract. The presence of blood in the urine gives it a brownish or smoky color. Usually, the bladder is the one to blame for the blood. Then of course, there are is the pair of kidneys that might be inflamed due to Bright's disease. At times, the blood might occur if kidney stones on their way out of the body happen to scratch the urethra.

The pain in such cases is extreme and grueling. And equally grueling is the treatment to be followed for this condition. Bitter gourd is given centre stage in the patient's diet. Drumsticks make a mandatory appearance in meals. Alcohol makes an exit from the dining table and so do hot and spicy foods. Meat soups may be allowed but only in moderate quantities. Also, white pumpkin mixed with sugarcane juice is known to lead to a faster recovery. Pomegranate also helps. Intake of large quantities of water is a must. Further, the patient has to desist from sexual intercourse during the course of the treatment. Remember that haematuria is a serious condition and the treatment needs to be followed with utmost care. If the blood in the urine still persists, you must consult a urologist.
