Treatment for water in the knee Water in the knee or knee effusion refers to a condition in which excess fluid builds up in and around the knee joint due to trauma, overuse or abuse of the knee, injuries or an underlying disease. Symptoms include pain, swelling, stiffness and bruising; however it depends on the cause for the condition. Injuries that cause water to build up in the knee joint include fractures, ligament or meniscus tear and overuse injuries from practising sports.
While osteoarthritis is the leading disease to cause knee effusion, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, kneecap bursitis, cysts and tumours can also lead to this problem.
Treatment for water in the knee depends on the cause and might require medication or orthopaedic procedures. However there are some simple remedies for relieving the pain and reducing the severity of the problem.
It is important to avoid all strenuous and weight bearing activities that cause stress to the knee. Application of an ice-pack to your knee for 15 to 20 minutes after every few hours can help to relieve the pain, keeping your feet raised and supporting your knee with a pillow below it. You should keep your feet in an elevated position even otherwise so that the water pooled in or your knee joint drains and enters the circulatory system, reaching the kidneys from where it can be naturally excreted. Some basic muscle toning exercises to tone your thigh and knee muscles will strengthen your knee and also reduce chances of water retention.
